Job Overview: YouthBuild GED Instructor 


Essential Functions & Responsibilities:  

  • Teaching basic skills to students with varying academic levels while integrating GED skills, reading and math skills, social justice and community issues, and culture (and also including social studies and sciences)
  • Assessing individual student progress and adapting curriculum and lesson plans to the needs of the students
  • Assessing student readiness to take particular GED exams, and coordinating with test providers around testing dates and scores
  • Keeping records in accordance with funding and staff needs
  • Assisting with the recruitment and intake assessment of prospective students
  • Attending all staff meetings and participating in programmatic activities


Qualifications: 

  • Familiarity with the TABE, CASAS, GED, and other standardized assessments
  • A respect for the ideas and intelligence of young adults
  • A strong commitment to helping young people succeed academically, reorient their lives, develop leadership and professional skills, and make a difference in their community
  • An awareness of the effects of privilege and institutionalized racism on youth, and a multicultural sensibility
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including collaboration with others around program issues, and team teaching


Essential Education & Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education or related field
  • Minimum of 2 (two) years of experience teaching basic skills to high school students, young adults, or adults
  • Bilingual: Spanish/English speaking preferred
  • Ability to complete tasks promptly and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and work with others in a team atmosphere
  • Adaptability – adapt to changes in the work environment, manage competing demands, and able to deal with frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events 
  • Dependability – consistently at work and on time, follow instructions, respond to management direction, and solicit feedback to improve performance
