SUMMARY: Change someone’s life from your couch Be a virtual adult literacy tutor with Anixter At Anixter, our Adult Literacy Program is made up of students, current and retired classroom teachers, people new to literacy, and academic professionals with decades of experience in education, who share a vision for engaging with adult learners, and are comfortable with individual with disabilities.

Our Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutors share these core values:

  • INTERGRITY: Passes background check and happily completes 12 hours of (self-paced/ virtual) tutor training. Can be trusted with a vulnerable learner by displaying professionalism, patience, and kindness.

  • FLEXIBILITY: Quickly and calmly responds to changing circumstances.
  • AGENCY: Appropriately takes initiative in their work and professional growth.
  • PARTNERSHIP: Commits to a minimum of 3 months with a learner (1:1 on zoom), once a week.
  • Develops a great relationship with Anixter and their learner.

A Virtual Literacy Tutor is a dedicated, creative, and kind educator who will provide virtual academic support (at least 1 adult learner, once a week, for 3 months, in one-on-one sessions) to an adult with weekly Literacy/ABE lessons. This will be done on zoom virtually, in a one-on-one on-line setting. The tutoring sessions are designed to provide academic instruction via a safe and secure online platform in increments, ranging from 35- minute to 1-hour sessions (depending on the learner).

One of the main perks of this role - flexible hours from home / remote Training is self-paced (do training when you want to, based on your schedule). We have opportunities on weekdays and on Saturdays, daytime and early evening. Tutors can make their own schedule and select who they work with

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Sit with adult learner, and tutor online, once a week, for at least 3 months. Encourage and instruct literacy with learner. Must finish the online Tutor training (12 hours).
  • Pass background Check
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Comfortable initiating Zoom virtual conferencing with adult learner weekly (share screen, use Wi-Fi from your home) Willing to complete 12 hours literacy tutor training (online and self-paced).
  • Must be comfortable with disabled people and/or low-performing adult students.
  • Native English-Speaking Applicants are preferred.
  • Firm grasp of the English Language is required.
  • Must have High School Diploma or G.E.D. and able to submit a copy of diploma or an official transcript
  • Must have laptop or desktop computer and Wi-Fi at home.
