Mech I Pan Welder

A shop hourly welding position with the primary responsibilities to use equipment to perform advanced welding processes to meet specified engineering requirements for the Pan Area. The Pan Welder will be responsible to perform high quality leak free welds using a variety of welding techniques. As a senior mechanic, The Mechanic I is an influencer, who leads junior mechanics or teams as assigned and demonstrates BAC’s values of Earning Trust, Embracing Responsibility, Showing Courage, and Driving Innovation.. The Mechanic I will also be required to train and mentor junior mechanics and assist the department leadership team with daily assignments as directed. The purpose for every position at BAC regardless of department or level can be summed up as doing the right thing in the right way.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Owns personal and team safety. Observes all safety rules and uses the proper safety equipment at all times.
- Contribute to departmental safety improvements and initiatives.
- Perform leak free welds using pulse welding procedures and equipment, critical welds and corner welding.
- Operate equipment in a manner that maximizes productivity and quality.
- Meet the FPY requirements as stated in Class B Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ).
- Coordinate the on-time delivery of Pan’s to all assembly lines in partnership with the Station Leader.
- Ensure all Pans are tested in line with BAC’s quality requirements.
- Drive LEAN practices and sustain 5S standards in the department.
- Aggressively uphold and support quality and process standards.
- Provide oversight and guidance for the welding passivation process in the Pan Department; Maintain proper inventory of consumables.
- Safely operate JIB cranes and/or overhead cranes to lift and move components.
- Train and develop junior mechanics to achieve technical and professional expertise.
- Provide leadership to the team in the absence of the Station Lead and or Team Leader.
- Continually evaluate and develop new ways to improve the department.
- Ensure open and clear communication to department employees.
- Understand departmental metrics and communicate / interpret for junior mechanics.
- Assist with the completion of detailed accident investigation reports for all accidents, which occur, in the Pan area.
- Meet or exceed production goals for shift.
- Perform other duties as assigned by plant leadership.
NATURE & SCOPE
Reports to the Team Leader, Station Leader or other senior mechanic as assigned. Provides hands on leadership and mentoring to junior mechanics as well as be prepared to fulfill department leadership roles as needed. As a senior mechanic, expertise may be requested to participate on regional project teams. Expectation is to operate as an influencer and subject matter expert.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Demonstrated ability to lead small groups.

- Ability to work independently and exhibit sound judgment.
- Ability to mentor and train junior mechanics.
- Advanced knowledge of the Pan Welding Process.
- A minimum of one year experience preforming critical and structural welds t is preferred
- Knowledge of the welding passivation process and any related EPA regulations.
- Must pass the following certifications within 90 days:
- Critical Weld (Class B) Welder Performance Qualification (WOPQ)
- CWB (Class B) Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ)
- Connection Welds (Class C) Welder Performance Qualification (WOPQ)
- Ability to read and interpret all types of BAC shop documents – Submittals, Fabrication Sheets, Assembly Lists (BoM’s), and Work Orders.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints and welding symbols.
- Ability to read measuring devices: weld gage, inclinometer & tape measure.
- Demonstrated ability to operate JIB and overhead cranes; achieved through required certification.
- Effective written communication including documentation of processes, and the communication of those processes with fellow mechanics. Ability to communicate to supervisors and co-workers with written memos or emails that are professional, concise and clearly understood.
- Demonstrated oral communication skills including the ability to communicate professionally with BAC customer and co-workers. The ability to share information verbally that is clearly understood and technically accurate.
- Competent in basic problem solving and root cause analysis tools such as Five Y’s..
- Working knowledge of computers including word processing, spreadsheets and databases, i.e., Word, Excel, Peoplesoft, Internet, etc.
- Ability to read and understand job schedules with the capacity to react
- Knowledge of and experience working with Production Light system.
- High level of product knowledge of BAC’s numerous models and parts.
- Competency with MS Excel including updating data and generating metrics in pre-formatted spreadsheets.
- Understands and adheres to LEAN principles in the area.
- Ability to access procedures and instructions in BAC’s document control system (BAMS)
WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The working environment includes lifting up to 50lbs. Standing is to be expected up to 80% of the time. Working at heights of up to 20 feet will be required. Additional activities include: walking, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and sitting. Fine hand manipulation of controls is needed as well as hand eye coordination to perform changes. Working hours can include any of three shifts and generally are scheduled for forty hours a week. Some weekend overtime is to be expected. Working temperatures include both wide fluctuations within the plant as well as ambient outside temperatures.
