Position Purpose:

Under the direction of the Optometrist, the Para-optometric Technician (POT) will provide support and assistance in the provision of eye care services to Wesley Health Center patients. Within their regulatory scope of practice, the POT will ensure all patients receive the highest quality optometric care and experience by linking the Doctor to the patient and preparation for the health visit.

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Assists with patient care and eye exams, including pre-testing patients, managing patient records and supporting patient flow throughout the exam.
  2. Performs tests to aid the optometrist in accurate diagnosis and treatment for the patient in appropriate time frame.
  3. Assist with proper use of diagnostic equipment including but not limited to the pupilometer, lensometer, autorefractor, keratometer, fundus camera, perimeters (visual fields), optical coherence tomography (OCT).
  4. Reviews prescriptions and/or patient information carefully, identifies special needs, consults with Optometrist.
  5. Take the appropriate measurements from patients for glasses and contact lenses and advising them about the benefits and drawbacks of eyewear.
  6. Provide information and guidance about the different frame options, eye wear care and ordering procedures for prescriptions.
  7. Assist patients with the adjustment of their frames to fit correctly and comfortably.
  8. Assist with managing inventory of frames, equipment and contact lenses.
  9. Provide customer support by assisting with resolving situations involving dissatisfied patients.
  10. Performs work accurately and thoroughly despite time pressure and patient volume.
  11. Handles and files all patient records in an organized and efficient manner in accordance with practice standards and HIPAA.
  12. Support the Optometrist with contact lens exams and orders, including but not limited to contact lens care, inventory and patient orders.
  13. Responsible for maintenance and disinfection of equipment; provides clinical support to the Optometrist as needed.


Requirements:

  1. High School graduate or equivalent.
  2. 1 year of strong customer service skills.
  3. Strong interpersonal and organization skills.
  4. Ability to assess priorities, address multiple tasks and deadlines in fast-paced environment.
  5. 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting.
  6. Experience in working with patients and staff from diverse socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural background.
  7. Bilingual ability (Spanish/English) preferred.
  8. Optometric technician certification preferred.
  9. BLS/CPR Certification from American Heart Association preferred.
  10. Para-Optometric Technician Certification (CPOT) preferred.
