Job Title: Peer Educator

Department: Youth Empowerment Services (YES)

Reports To: Health Education Outreach Coordinator

Supervises: None

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: N2

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time

AKBCU: No ICPA: Yes

General Functions:

The Peer Educator works in multiple CITC service area sites to teach the Strengthening Our Youth curriculum. As part of the Tribal PREP (Personal Responsibility Education Program) Strengthening Our Youth program, the Peer Educator will serve as a resource for peers regarding reproductive health, sexuality and other health concerns. The Peer Educator will assist in developing curriculum and/or one-on-one encounters with peers as they occur naturally. The Peer Educator will co-facilitate group sessions on a regularly scheduled basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist staff in planning, teaching and evaluating lessons.
  • Prepare supplies and classroom materials for each session.
  • Co-facilitate sessions utilizing the established curriculum.
  • Stay current and up to date regarding youth growth and development, sexually transmitted infections and other social, sexual and health-related issues to improve upon and update curriculum as needed.
  • Assist with recruitment activities via presentations, phone/video calls, meetings and community events.
  • Attend monthly Roundtables, Curriculum Working Groups and other Strengthening OUR Youth events.
  • Reflect a high degree of sensitivity regarding confidential information.
  • Performs other duties as needed and/or assigned.

Minimum Core Competencies: CITC Values, Respectful Leadership, Professionalism, Emotional Intelligence, Problem Solving/Critical Thinking, Communication Skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be between the ages of 17 and 24 years old at the time of application.
  • High School Diploma/GED, attending High School or College in good academic standing, or enrolled in a GED/HS Completion program.
  • Continued employment status will be contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory state and federal criminal background check.
  • Experience working with Alaska Native/American Indian people, knowledge of their values and belief systems and ability to provide culturally competent services.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or interest in youth development, sexual health education, and inclusivity.
  • Experience in public speaking.
  • Understanding of culturally responsive practices.
