CAREER PREPARATION PERIOD SPECIALIST

Position Title: Career Preparation Specialist

FLSA: Exempt


The Career Preparation Period Specialist position provides instructional support for a U.S Department of Labor Job Corps contractor at Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Center. The Job Corps program is a federally funded residential training program. Job Corps’ mission is to educate and train youth ages 16 -24 for successful careers in the nation’s fastest-growing industries.

Summary of Duties: The Career Preparation Period Specialist provides instruction during the Career Preparation Phase of enrollment. Assists students in becoming acclimated to the Job Corps Program and the Center. Works with the team members to assist students in gaining employability skills. Puts into place all systems necessary to meet any special needs a student might have. Establishes a high degree of student/instructor rapport. Records daily attendance in the Center Information System (CIS). Coordinates enrollment requirements in conjunction with the Career Counselor to meet Department of Labor (DOL) requirement of CPP.

Description of Duties:
  • Develops effective student educational experiences that engage and stimulate student learning.
  • Adequately prepares for instruction. Integrates math, reading, and writing concepts with employability, and Career Success Standards skills with lesson planning.
  • Develops and implements curriculum and training outlines necessary to attain student, Center and DOL goals.
  • Utilizes Job Corps guidelines and subject course guides.
  • Has an accurate syllabus for the course and completes lesson plans as required?
  • Creates and maintains training records for each subject area.
  • Conducts classes that explain test preparation and study skills.
  • Conducts assessments to determine areas of strength and difficulty, using this information to prescribes individual plans.
  • Identifies appropriate materials.
  • Designs instruction to meet individual student needs.
  • Develops and implements Career Success Standard projects.
  • Meets with academic and career technical training instructors to identify required skills that can be taught and reinforced with applying technical skills in an academic setting and in technical instruction.
  • Develops and implements applied academic projects.
  • Identifies students personal and academic issues so that the appropriate support can be provided.
  • Administers an accommodations assessment.
  • Determines career development readiness and determines barriers to career transition and documents these as appropriate.
  • Submits ESPs in a timely manner, documents student progress.
  • Records daily attendance.
  • Administers accurate completion of the training records and course guides.
  • Documents each progress in case notes. Maintains curriculum necessary to attain goals.
  • Prepares lesson plans at least two weeks in advance.
  • Submits necessary schedule change information.
  • Documents and distributes CPAR in the CPP/MYPACE phase of the program as necessary. Ensures and documents contact with parents of minors as necessary into the CIS System as a case note in the RAP format.
  • Engage in job search and preparation (resume writing, emailing inquiries, etc).
  • Requisitions consumable supplies (e.g., paper, ribbons, toner cartridges, etc.).
  • Prepares/maintains accurate records both electronically and manually.
  • Helps students understand program objectives and performance standards.
  • Helps students identify and make use of supplemental instructional/media resources.
  • Encourages self-­reliance, problem-­solving, critical-­thinking, creativity, and performance skills.
  • Collaborates with other staff to gather information to ensure that all student’s needs, concerns, challenges, and career plans are met.
  • Shares knowledge and resources beneficial to the enhancement of student learning.
  • Evaluates student performance in a timely manner as outlined in the (SOP) Standard Operation Procedure.
  • Consults with counseling staff as needed (e.g., phone calls, E-­mail, written notes, meetings, etc.).
  • Inspects classroom equipment to ensure that it is ready when needed.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and safety checks, provides routine cleaning of equipment, classroom, and all spaces according to the Covid-19 guidelines.
  • Increase critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills of students.
  • Provide guidance and structure for self-­directed and life-­long learning.
  • Motivate students to actively participate and engage in learning.
  • Be able to impart real-­world scenarios to the application of classroom content and objectives.
  • Produce and instruct high-­quality, well-­prepared classes where learning is promoted students enjoy the learning process.
  • Ensure students’ technical skills meet the needs of Work-­based learning partners and job placement requirements.
  • Uses problem-­solving techniques to address and resolve concerns.

Education and Experience Must possess High School Diploma or equivalency.

Certifications, Licenses, Registration Valid state driver’s license;; CPR/First Aid certifications
