Job Summary

The incumbent, under general direction maintains and repairs gas/diesel powered vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations of the City. This may include diagnostics and some scheduling and work order preparation. The incumbent assists with the maintenance, repair, adjustments, and troubleshooting of automotive, trucks, transit buses, trailers, heavy equipment, and generator systems/generator system components. The incumbent performs responsible skilled craft work maintaining and repairing gasoline and diesel vehicles along with other on and Off-Road Equipment.


This position is subject to 24-Hour “On Call” duties from Thursday to Wednesday on a weekly rotational basis depending on how many Fleet Mechanics are available.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Replaces batteries, wiper blades and light bulbs as needed.
  • Conducts tire changes, installs, and balances.
  • Conducts brake services and turns rotors as needed.
  • Conducts lube services, alignments, and steering component repairs using our alignment machine.
  • Diagnoses, repairs, and services automotive HVAC systems.
  • Conducts transmission and differential services, repairs, and overhauls as needed.
  • Uses Diagnostic equipment to diagnose engine faults and other component faults.
  • Repairs and overhauls engines as needed.
  • Assists with the safety inspection of vehicles and equipment.
  • Conducts maintenance and diagnosis on various types of gas and diesel vehicles and a variety of other equipment.
  • Diagnoses, services, and repairs of small engines (weed-eaters, chainsaws, lawnmowers) and basic hydraulic systems.
  • Diagnoses, services, and repairs aerial equipment, pumps, valves, and plumbing of fire apparatuses.
  • Keeps shop area clean.
  • Answers phones in the shop.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required.

Supervisor Duties

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


Work Environment

  • The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Duties are conducted primarily in an indoor environment. Incumbent may spend time in an out-of-door environment. Either situation may include exposure to extreme heat or cold or wet/humid conditions without temperature change.
  • Frequently subjected to loud noise and vibration, atmospheric conditions including dust in poorly ventilated surroundings. Occasionally encounter fumes, odors, and gases in poorly ventilated conditions.
  • Limited to substantial encounters with mechanical, chemical, and electrical hazards and explosives (gasoline). May also encounter asbestos and CO2, and situations which may cause burns. Occasionally works at heights above ground level in an unenclosed workstation.

Qualifications

Fleet Mechanic I

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience and education REQUIRED.
  • One (1) year experience in Automotive Maintenance & Repair REQUIRED.
  • Candidate REQUIRED to be able to provide their own tools adequate to perform the essential job functions.
  • Ability to Obtain Colorado Refrigeration and Recovery License within ninety (90) days of hire.
  • Ability to Obtain ICS Certifications IS100 & IS700 within six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to Obtain Colorado Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A) with Air Brake Endorsement within one (1) year of hire.

Fleet Mechanic II

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience and education REQUIRED.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in Automotive Maintenance & Repair REQUIRED.
  • Candidate REQUIRED to be able to provide their own tools adequate to perform the essential job functions.
  • Colorado Refrigeration and Recovery License REQUIRED.
  • One (1) year Experience in Air Brake Maintenance & Repair REQUIRED.
  • Ability to Obtain ICS Certifications IS100 & IS700 within six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to Obtain Colorado Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A) with Air Brake Endorsement within one (1) year of hire.

Fleet Mechanic III

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience and education REQUIRED.
  • Eight (8) years experience in Automotive Maintenance & Repair REQUIRED.
  • Candidate REQUIRED to be able to provide their own tools adequate to perform the essential job functions.
  • Colorado Refrigeration and Recovery License REQUIRED.
  • One (1) year experience in Air Brake Maintenance & Repair REQUIRED.
  • Colorado Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A) with Air Brake Endorsement REQUIRED.
  • Ability to Obtain ICS Certifications IS100 & IS700 within six (6) months of hire.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write complex reports and distill information for many audiences.
  • This position requires close, distance and peripheral vision.
  • Ability to hear an average conversational voice in a quiet room, using one or both ears, at a distance of six (6) feet. Ability to hear sounds and signals indicating work and safety necessities.
  • This position requires standing, walking and sitting for periods of time. Utilization of hands and fingers to operate office computer keyboard and equipment required. Must be able to reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel or crouch if needed.
  • Must be able to lift up to one hundred (100) pounds as needed and frequently lift up to 50 (50) pounds.
  • This position requires effective proficiency in the use of computer software and applications, office equipment, and professional telephone use. The ability to type quickly with few to no errors is also very important. This position will often require multi-tasking in the use of computer, phone, and office equipment while interacting with clients. Candidates for this position may be required to take and pass technology proficiency assessments prior to employment.
