JOB SUMMARY

This is skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of a variety of specialized wastewater plant equipment, apparatus and fixtures. A Plant Mechanic II performs the more difficult and responsible maintenance and repair work including routing electrical repairs on pumps and motors and related equipment.

Work involves responsibility for the skilled performance of bench, hand tool, field and machine operations in the maintenance and repair of specialized wastewater plant equipment.

Work assignments are given by a chief plant mechanic with routine maintenance and repair operations performed independently. Occasionally, work assignments may involve assisting other plant mechanics in a major repair assignment. Work is subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion.

ILLUSTRATIVE JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Replaces pump and electrical motor bearings, bushings, shaft and related parts and checks for proper operation; lubricates and changes oil in electrical motors and pumps; performs preventive maintenance.
  • Uses a variety of hand tools, cutting and welding equipment, and electrical test equipment; does plumbing and painting work as required.
  • Repairs and maintains polymer and ferric chloride machines; cleans and replaces heater motors and cores; flushes basins as required; changes chlorination tanks.
  • Rebuilds filters, motor fan guards, hand rails and related safety equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on both mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on plant process equipment.
  • Trouble shoots electrical apparatus and effectuates problem solutions.
  • Maintains work area including sweeping, mopping, and other related cleaning activities.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant's grounds, including lawn maintenance and snow removal.
  • Operates plant vehicles and equipment.
  • Reads and interprets electrical and mechanic blueprints.
  • Serves as relief operator to maintain plant operations.
  • Serves on the Wastewater Plant's standby list.
  • Available for after hour call in for equipment repairs, power outages, and rain/snow melt events.
  • Performs related work as required.

QUALFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in a skilled maintenance trade involving a variety of mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance tasks; or a minimum of one (1) year of vocational/secondary education and/or training which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
    • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of standard safety precautions necessary in the work.
    • Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials used in the mechanical trades, and demonstrated skill in their application.
    • Knowledge of the general methods of related electric and plumbing repairs, and skill in general maintenance repairs.
  • Two (2) years of previous work experience as a Wastewater Plant Operator preferred.
  • Current State of Michigan Wastewater Class "D" license preferred.
    • If license is not possessed at time of job acceptance, must be able to obtain within two (2) years of acceptance of the Plant Mechanic II position.
  • Previous working experience or training with the use and operation of , but not limited to, Centrifugal Pumps, Piston Pumps, and Diaphragm Pumps.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan driver's license.
  • Must have basic computer skills in order to work with preventive maintenance software.
  • Previous experience in the use of bench and hand tools, machines and equipment of the mechanical trades.

ABILTIES

  • Ability to perform skilled mechanical tasks independently.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical, instrumentations controls, process flow, and mechanical drawings and diagrams.
  • Ability to complete work from sketches, blueprints, and diagrams.
  • Ability to read meters and gauges correctly.
  • Ability to act quickly and competently in making necessary wastewater operation adjustments.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in completion of mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy
  • Ability to enter confined space areas to assist for inspection and maintenance.
  • Ability to collect samples and to conduct standard laboratory tests.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, as well as establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and the ability to understand and accurately follow oral and written instructions to maintain and prepare accurate records and written reports.
  • Ability to operate the Wastewater Treatment Plant's standby generator when needed.
  • Ability to solve complex problems, and work effectively under stress.
