Position Summary:

Under general supervision, promotes healthy lifestyles by providing fitness, exercise, and nutrition education and programs to the members of the Tohono O'odham Nation. Promotes good health by planning and coordinating activities on nutrition education and awareness, provides counseling and follow-up on eligible clients.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Depending on area of assignment, incumbent may not be required to perform some of the duties listed below):

  • Conducts group exercise classes for small and large groups; explains and demonstrates the principles and application of exercise concepts.
  • Provides technical assistance to communities, groups, and agencies requesting to improve fitness activities.
  • Orients clients; takes weight and measurement; obtains dietary histories of individuals to plan individualized nutrition programs.
  • Documents client charts and keeps accurate records.
  • Plans and communicates schedule of fitness classes.

When Assigned to Health Programs:

  • Assists in recruiting, planning and participating in community health committees and activities.
  • Develops curriculum and prepares materials used in teaching and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
  • Assists clients in the development of individualized fitness plans.
  • Educates individuals in food selection, preparation, and menu planning based upon nutritional needs.
  • Monitors blood sugar level, blood pressure and other medical conditions of clients.
  • Educates at-risk individuals by providing them with educational information on how to reduce the risks of diabetes.

General Tasks for All Incumbents:

  • Plans, organizes, and conducts workshops on nutrition education and diabetes awareness in community organizations, schools, clinics, and other related agencies.
  • Makes home visits, visits clinics or other sites to determine health status and provide individual counseling to teach principles of health, food and nutrition.
  • Assists in scheduling with health service providers.
  • May assist in planning and participating in community health fairs, activities, and community presentations; conducts food preparation demonstrations.
  • Provides quality fitness assessments and continued follow up for people participating in personal training.
  • Maintains accurate documentation; writes narrative and statistical reports on activities.
  • Collaborates with and makes referrals to other agencies as needed.
  • Maintains professional knowledge by conducting research, attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of nutritional principles, diet, food selection, body composition and economics.
  • Knowledge of motivational techniques and practices in physical fitness activities.
  • Knowledge of safe and sanitary food preparation and storage.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
  • Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Ability to create and present effective speeches and presentations.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
  • Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O'odham Nation.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's Degree in Health Education or closely related field, and three years' work experience in a health related field, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Must obtain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within the first six months of hire.
  • Must obtain a Basic Trainer, Physical Fitness and Nutrition Certification within one year of hire.
  • Food Handler's Card must be obtained within six months of hire.
  • Must be a certified HIPAA or obtain a HIPAA Certification within one year of hire.
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
