Urban Policing Coordinator

JOB SUMMARY

Harris-Stowe State University is seeking a dedicated and experienced candidate to serve as the Urban Policing Program Coordinator. The successful candidate will place a crucial role in developing and managing programs aimed at enhancing the Urban Policing Program. The position requires a strong background in law enforcement, public safety or security, coupled with a commitment to fostering positive community relations and implementing innovative policing programs.

The Urban Policing Coordinator serves as the assistant and support to the Director of Urban Policing. The Urban Policing Coordinator assists to maintain data and metrics for Urban Policing programs. The coordinator maintains files to remain compliant with the Missouri Peace Officer and Standards (P.O.S.T.) recording keeping requirements, assists to maintain the schedules for academy classes, continuing education courses, summer program initiatives, and special projects determined by the Director of Urban Policing.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizes training programs and initiatives for the Urban Policing Program.

  • Assists with the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) compliance requirements.

  • Maintains detailed calendar of events for Urban Policing programs and initiatives; Arranges schedules, travel itineraries, and conference attendance. Establishes a monthly and yearly continuing education schedule.

  • Assist with annual budget records maintenance and oversight; tracks expenditures and revenue.
  • Monitors data for the law enforcement training academy; prepares reports for university administrators.

  • Assists with identifying and securing program funding.
  • Orders supplies, equipment, and other resources as directed.
  • Coordinates with the Director of Urban Policing for continuing instructor placement and replacement.

  • Prepares training manuals and instructional learning resources for program participants.
  • Organize training sessions, workshops, and seminars for students, faculty and staff, and community members.

  • Serves as a liaison in the absence of the Urban Policing Director.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to be flexible and collaborative with law enforcement agencies, instructors, campus community, and community constituents.

  • Have working knowledge of coordinating programs for peace officers, students, and law enforcement support personnel.

  • Proven experience in data applications, creating spreadsheets, and word-processing.

  • Familiar with POST training requirements for peace officers.

  • Secures training space for on/off campus training courses.

  • Able to prepare reports and presentations for diverse audiences (including but not limited to university administrators, students, law enforcement agencies, community groups, etc.).

  • Effectively prioritizes multiple tasks, organizes workloads and meets deadlines.

  • Bend, reach, carry, and lift up to 30 lbs. as necessary to perform assignments, carry equipment, etc.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of three (3) years in public safety, law enforcement, public administration, or related fields.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Work with law enforcement and public safety partners on training and education programs.
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain data, analyze data, and remain compliant with P.O.S.T. documentation standards.
  • Ability to work in a moderate to fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain social media presence for Urban Policing marketing and advertisement purposes.
  • Able to receive constructive feedback to improve streamline of program effectiveness.
  • Leads recruitment for the police academy and continuing education programs.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, communications, or related fields.

  • Previous experience in an academic or training environment.
  • Proven track record of securing grants or funding sources.
