Job DescriptionJob DescriptionJob Summary:A Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) is a paraprofessional with personal breastfeeding experience who provides basic breastfeeding information and support to WIC mothers. The BFPC position will be combined with clerk duties to fulfill a 40-hour work week. The job duties of the clerk include but are not limited to providing prompt and professional customer service when participants arrive at the front desk, to determine the purpose of their visit, to assist them with any forms or non-medical questions, performing clerical, clinical (including finger sticks), and outreach duties, as well as providing responsive, courteous, and efficient service to Geary County residents and the public.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe duties described below are indicative of what the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor/Clerk might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any County Resolutions for the position of WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor/Clerk. This position description is not designed to list all tasks and responsibilities of this position. Geary County reserves the right to revise or change job duties as the need may arise. This position description does not constitute a written or implied contract of employment.
Duties and Responsibilities (BFPC):
  • Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, WIC clinic visits, home visits, and/or hospital visits at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC program.
  • Initial in-person introduction or phone call to introduce self, explain BFPC Program, and answer any questions the participant has.
  • Receives a caseload of WIC participants and makes required routine periodic contacts with all participants who are referred and/or assigned.
  • Monthly text messages/phone calls to pregnant participants
  • Daily/Weekly/Monthly text messages/phone calls to breastfeeding participants
  • Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including informing them of the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers and getting off to a good start with breastfeeding. She also helps mothers prevent and manage common breastfeeding concerns.
  • Provides emotional support to mother and her significant other through personal interaction.
  • Provides the mother with advice and expectations for the learning period and the continuing rewards of breastfeeding.
  • Provides anticipatory guidance to reduce the occurrence of problems.
  • Provides information on the effects on lactation from: foods, medications, and home remedies, within guidelines addressed in WIC’s BFPC training.
  • Respects each participant by keeping her information strictly confidential.
  • Keeps accurate records, in KWIC, of all contacts made with WIC participants.
  • Refers mothers, according to clinic-established protocols, to the designated breastfeeding expert – one or more of the following:
  • WIC breastfeeding coordinator or dietitian
  • Lactation Consultant
  • Mother or infant’s physician
  • Public health programs in the community
  • Attend and assists DBE with breastfeeding classes and support groups.
  • Assists DBE with the local WIC clinic’s breast pump program.
  • Attends monthly staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops to receive continuing education.
  • Assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding and the BFPC program through a variety of projects and duties.
  • Assist WIC Coordinator and BFPC Coordinator in monitoring the private WIC Facebook group for breastfeeding moms.

Skills and Abilities (BFPC):· Has successfully breastfed at least one infant for at least 6 months (does not have to be currently breastfeeding).· Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience.· Is a member of the population that will be served (preferably is a current or former WIC participant.)· Completes the training sessions required to become and continue as a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor.· After completion of BFPC training, observes other peer counselors or lactation consultants (for at least one-half day) as they help mothers with breastfeeding. Reads assigned books, views DVD’s and materials about breastfeeding.· Is available outside usual 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. working hours to new mothers who are having breastfeeding concerns
Duties and Responsibilities (clerk):· Explain the procedure for collecting measurements to participants.· Assist nutrition staff in providing general information in pamphlets and newsletters about healthy foods, food buying, and food preparation. · Assists CPA in nutrition education activities.· Assists in preparation of materials for low-risk nutrition education· Provides appropriate referrals.· Provides breastfeeding promotion and support as appropriate.· Assists with the issuing of and security for eWIC cards. · Answer phones, give information, and schedule appointments when necessary. · Process participants according to accepted state (KDHE) and local policies and procedures.· Explain WIC services, benefits, and policies to participants. · Initiate, maintain, and updated records. · Complete anthropometric and hematologic measurements. · Provide necessary forms and instructions to participants.· Serve participants in a courteous and efficient manner.· Follow up scheduled appointments according to state and local policies and procedures. · Obtain a signature for the release of information when the participant requests medical records.· Process and coordinate participant phone calls, appointment intake, and card pick up per WIC policies and procedures.· Answer and communicate phone and verbal message to other staff members.· Provide participants with appropriate WIC paperwork and books.· Complete appointment confirmation and adjust appointment flow sheet as needed during certification person.· Assist dietitians in nutrition education activities and outreach. · Work with other staff members to monitor weekly reports and make phone calls to eligible participants.· Record hours worked on a quarterly time study form.
Skills and Abilities (clerk):· Completes KWIC and other required training modules based on job duties.· Receives a minimum of two education opportunities per year consistent with WIC job responsibilities plus required civil rights training.· Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public.· Ability to take control of situations in a responsible manner.· Ability to interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, Federal, State, and local regulations, safety manuals, operating and repair manuals, warning labels, etc.
Equipment Knowledge Required:· Ability to operate various types of equipment – standard office equipment, computer, and intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office software.· Ability to use KWIC software. · Other equipment could be required.
Language Skills:· Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a professional and friendly matter with customers, citizens, co-workers, and management.· Ability to communicate in both written and verbal form.· Ability to communicate information and teach and train others regarding polices and processes in both written and verbal form.
