Job Title: Infection Prevention RN

Department: Infection Prevention and Employee Health, Division of Quality and Patient Safety

Reports to: Manager of Infection Prevention and Employee Health/System Director of Infection Prevention and Employee Health

Job Summary:

Under the leadership of the System Director of Infection Prevention (IP) and Employee Health (EH) and the Manager of IP and EH, the IP RN is accountable for implementation of and compliance with policies, practices, and processes of the Infection Prevention program, following all current local, state and federal guidelines, standards and regulations

The IP RN provides consultative services (as a Subject Matter Expert). They will drive and foster a culture of patient and staff safety, providing service excellence to all.

  • Working knowledge of desktop software applications (e.g., MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, Internet, Email
  • Promotes the development and implementation of the Planetree Model with a focus on healing and nurturing body, mind and spirit; to produce a health care environment in which patients experience caring, kindness, and respect as do their families and the hospital staff

Position Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Effectively apply NHSN surveillance definitions and gather relevant surveillance data
  • Effectively navigate the electronic medical record and available surveillance software
  • Demonstrate understanding of regulatory and advisory guidelines through application
  • Follow the APIC Novice to Expert Pathway to attain or further develop knowledge of microbiology, infectious disease, antimicrobial therapy, immunization, aseptic, technique, and patient care practices
  • Effectively and efficiently manage daily operations of Infection Prevention responsibilities, including but not limited to surveillance, rounding and consultation
  • Utilize and synthesize scientific evidence for decision making and intervention planning
  • Provide education relevant to IP and EH subject matter, including but not limited to New Employee Orientation
  • Understanding of epidemiological and statistical tools and concepts
  • Identify occurrences, reservoirs, incubation periods, periods of communicability, modes of transmission, signs and symptoms of susceptibility associated with disease
  • Present Infection Prevention data in an effective manner that is appropriate to the audience
  • Collaborate with public health (county and state) effectively and appropriately
  • Provides cross coverage for EH RN, as assigned by Manager or Director
  • Rotates on-call responsibilities with EH RN and IP/EH Manager

Education and Development:

  • Completes all mandatory in-services within the calendar year
  • Annually attends at least three relevant continuing education programs to maintain industry expertise in best practices. Must be approved by Manager or Director in advance.
  • Successfully progresses through all steps of the APIC Novice to Expert Pathway within the first two years
  • Attends Lean Six Sigma Training within first 3 years, attains Yellow Belt at minimum.

Requirements:

  1. Current NYS R.N. license required. BSN in Nursing preferred
  2. Two years of experience in a position titled IP RN preferred
  3. Must successfully pass CIC certification exam within 2 years of employment or date established by System Director of Infection Prevention and Employee Health
