Capital University invites applications for the Head Cross Country/Track & Field Coach position. This is a full time, benefit eligible position. This position will be responsible for the overall development and maintenance of the Capital University Cross Country and Track & Field Programs, which are members of the NCAA Division III and Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). This individual will need to reflect the beliefs and display the characteristics of the University. This individual will promote the ideals of being a team player, hard worker, a good communicator, and a willingness to provide the best possible student-athlete experience. Responsibilities include recruiting qualified student-athletes, adhere to the mission, vision, and values of both Capital University and the Athletics Department, and to build on the proud traditions of past Capital alumni.


Primary roles and responsibilities:

  • Plans, conducts, and teaches game skills and strategies, pre-season conditioning, team selection, practice sessions and competitive events.
  • Develops team rules, carries out team discipline and records team and individual team improvement.
  • Work collaboratively within the University to plan, organize, implement, and follow up on an extensive on-going recruiting effort through written, verbal, and personal contact with student-athletes.
  • Oversee compliance with NCAA and OAC rules and regulations.
  • Oversee the appointments, supervision and all actions of the assistant coaches and support staff for the cross country and track & field programs.
  • Coordinate athletic planning, program development and assessment that focus on student-athlete performance, personal and leadership development:
    • Build a competitive program with strong recruiting both regionally and nationally.
    • Strategically plan and execute scheduling as well as travel arrangements of conference and non-conference meets to advance the cross country and track & field programs and maximize use of financial resources.
    • Prepare student-athletes for competition through thorough analysis and breakdown of scheduled conference and non-conference opponents.
    • Develop, recommend, and implement specific training/conditioning programs and skills development programs.
    • Cultivate alumni and other constituents to further goals of the cross country and track & field programs, athletics department, and Capital University.
  • Oversee and maintain the operations and booster accounts budget management for the cross country and track & field programs.
  • Coordinate athletic events and programs that are planned intentionally to enhance the campus community and school pride.
  • Ensure proper safety precautions are always followed.
  • Ensure adherence to rules, regulations, and policies of all governing bodies (Capital University, OAC, and NCAA).
  • Work in coordination with the Director of Athletics, other coaches, and support staff to achieve overall goals established by the athletics department.
  • Work with other students, faculty, and staff to support the retention of student-athletes and promote teamwork, set high standards support the academic, personal and leadership development of student-athletes.
  • Correspond with opposing coaches for upcoming meets and monitor contracts for officials and their payment.
  • Works with and consults athletic trainers regarding mental and physical health and safety needs of student-athletes.
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned by the Director of Athletics or designee.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree or equivalent highly preferred with preference given to applicants with a minimum of two years of coaching experience at the college level.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass a background check prior to being hired.
