  1. POSITION SUMMARY: The Parent Navigator is responsible for engaging with families and supporting them in their goals. They will advocate for them with local systems and help them access community resources. This position is responsible for providing intensive in-home services to parents with cognitive limitations. These services will be provided in person at various locations in the community, in the home of the parent, or at Pearl Buck Center. Services are expected to last up to eight weeks during a child Protective Services (CPS) assessment and up to 16 weeks for a permanency case. Caseload will be an average of 14 families a month. This position requires evening and weekend hours.
  1. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Apply Agency core values of stewardship, compassion, integrity and equity
  • Provide services to honor and align with the beliefs, practices, culture, and linguistic needs of a diverse population and community with varied and intersecting biological, social, and cultural categories.
  • Provide weekly parenting skills and skill-building services to referred families.
  • Provide parent coaching using evidence-based strategies and strength-based messaging that support a safe home environment
  • Assist with developing trauma-informed parenting approaches that build respect and foster nurturing engagement with their child(ren)
  • Model age-appropriate parenting techniques and interaction strategies across settings such as home, community, school, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Family to identify parenting behaviors and conditions that need improvement for the well-being using strength-based feedback that honors the family's culture and traditions
  • Teach and role model age-appropriate redirection techniques respecting the child(ren)'s self-autonomy
  • Guide and role model self-regulation, de-escalation, and redirecting techniques that build attachment and trust between parent and child(ren)
  • Review, track, and acknowledge parent's progress towards achieving the parenting goals established by the referring Caseworker
  • Assist parent/s in establishing family routines and schedules to help provide physical and emotional well-being within the home so the child(ren) will have a predictable home environment.
  • Meal planning, dietary supports, budget development, and financial education
  • Improve home safety based on the developmental stages of the child/ren.

  • Self-management services help families build additional problem-solving skills to eventually become self-sufficient.
  • Identifying and coordinating counseling resources for parent/s and child(ren)
  • Provide services to help parents and their child(ren) access and receive increased social support from family friends, and neighborhood and community programs that are tailored to the cultural and emotional needs of the family.
  • Provide parent transportation services as needed to facilitate parent's participation in services.
  • Respond to family crises when necessary providing peer support, intervention, and advocacy using a trauma informed approach.
  • Oversee a client's use of agency funds for assistance based on contract guidelines.
  • Provide clear, concise, and objective records of client interaction.
  1. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Adapt parenting education materials for parents with cognitive difficulties
  • Interface with community partners and other staff to advocate for clients and collaborate with providers
  • Works cooperatively with Department of Human Services
  • Respond to all requests given by the Oregon Department of Justice
  • Participate in weekly supervision with Preschool and Family Supports Director to review case goal progress
  1. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Knowledge of community resources available in Lane County
  • Have a respectful, open, unbiased, and accepting attitude toward parents and their families
  • Bachelor's degree in human services/social work, special education, early childhood education, community services, or related field; or a combination of two years' work experience and two years of education and training in a field related to social work; or three years of work experience in a social service field working with families from multi-stressed environments
  • Cultural/linguistic competency as relevant to assigned families
  • Ability to communicate and write professionally
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification or the ability to obtain certification
  • Current valid driver's license with acceptable driving record and ability to obtain requiredinsurance coverage
  • Complete 25 hours of continuing education in early intervention/education
  • Ability to pass an Oregon Department of Human Services and DELC background check

  • PHYSICAL DEMAND:

  • The physical effort typically applied in this job will vary depending on situation. In the office environment traditional computer use, keyboarding, standing, walking, sitting and communicating will apply. Out in the field, driving, standing, walking, communicating as well as some lifting and bending may apply.
MENTAL OR VISUAL DEMAND:
  • Frequent mental and visual focus is required while working with children, families and during recordkeeping and reporting.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Working conditions will typically be in a climate controlled and regulated environment
  • Projects out in the field could result in a variety of work settings
ATTENDANCE:
  • This position requires availability based on business need
  • It is imperative that attendance protocols are adhered to and that Department Call-In Policies are maintained at all times
  • Clients and Co-workers depend on you being on the job and on time

  • SAFETY:

  • There is never a good reason to risk your own personal safety or that of a co-worker, client or business partner.
  • Being pro-active to prevent injuries or incidents is an expectation
  • All injuries or incidents, no matter how small, must be reported

  • FSLA:
  • The position of Parent Navigator is a non-exempt
  • Non-Exempt positions are eligible for overtime pay
