Location: Community Health Center of Fort Dodge, Inc., Mason City, Iowa location
Department: Laboratory Services
Reports To: Medical Clinic Supervisor
Employment Type: Full-time/Part-time

Position Summary:
The Phlebotomist at Community Health Center of Fort Dodge, Inc. is responsible for collecting, processing, and handling various laboratory specimens, including blood, urine, cheek swabs, and respiratory samples. This role involves both in-house testing and preparing specimens for shipment to an outside reference lab. The Phlebotomist will ensure that all samples are collected safely, accurately, and efficiently while maintaining patient comfort and confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Specimen Collection:

    • Perform venipunctures, capillary punctures, and other specimen collection techniques to obtain blood, urine, cheek swabs, respiratory samples, and other specimens as required.
    • Ensure proper identification and labeling of all specimens to maintain accuracy and traceability.
    • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, following infection control and safety protocols.
  2. Patient Interaction:

    • Greet and interact with patients in a professional and compassionate manner.
    • Verify patient identity and explain the procedure to ensure patient comfort and cooperation.
    • Respond to patient questions and concerns, providing appropriate reassurance and information.
  3. Specimen Processing and Handling:

    • Prepare specimens for in-house testing and for transport to an external reference lab according to established protocols.
    • Ensure proper packaging, documentation, and timely transport of specimens to the designated lab.
    • Operate laboratory equipment for in-house tests as needed, following all guidelines and procedures.
  4. Data Entry and Documentation:

    • Accurately enter patient information, test orders, and specimen details into the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system (Epic).
    • Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of all laboratory activities, including specimen logs, equipment maintenance records, and quality control data.
  5. Compliance and Safety:

    • Adhere to all regulatory and organizational guidelines, including OSHA, HIPAA, and CLIA standards.
    • Participate in ongoing training and quality improvement initiatives to stay current with best practices and ensure compliance.
    • Report any incidents, errors, or potential safety hazards to the Clinic Manager or designated supervisor.
  6. Collaboration:

    • Work closely with medical, dental, and behavioral health staff to coordinate patient care and ensure timely processing of lab orders.
    • Communicate effectively with external reference labs regarding specimen requirements, shipping schedules, and test results.
  7. Other Duties:

    • Assist in maintaining laboratory inventory and ordering supplies as needed.
    • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and other organizational activities as required.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager or designated supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program preferred.
  • Certification by a recognized certifying agency (e.g., ASCP, NHA) is preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience as a phlebotomist in a clinical setting, preferably in an FQHC or similar healthcare environment.
  • Proficient in specimen collection, processing, and handling for various types of laboratory tests.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR), preferably Epic.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with patients and healthcare staff.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry laboratory supplies and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity to perform specimen collection and operate laboratory equipment.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a clinical laboratory environment with exposure to biological hazards and chemicals.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required to ensure safety.
