Under the direction of the Waterfront Coordinator, the Camp Lifeguard carries the primary responsibility for the safety and well-being of all persons in the waterfront area. The Camp Lifeguard enforces all waterfront rules and regulations and uses good judgment and experience to prevent accidents. If an incident or accident occurs, the Camp Lifeguard will act within YMCA of Montclair Camp at the Lake procedures in aiding the individual(s).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • To actively guard the waterfront from a standing position or lifeguard chair, and never leave the waterfront unattended. Prior to exiting the waterfront area, arrange for relief by a certified lifeguard or clear the waterfront of all swimmers until a certified lifeguard appears.
  • Not permitted to engage in extended conversations or other activities while guarding the waterfront.
  • Enforce waterfront rules and regulations of the YMCA as well as any camp specific regulations.
  • Signal infraction of waterfront rule through use of a whistle, required personal equipment.
  • Set up lane lines and safety ropes as required by waterfront program scheduling.
  • Able to instruct swimming lessons as designated by the Waterfront Coordinator.
  • A wristwatch is required lifeguard equipment which ensures that buddy checks, lifeguard rotations, and water activities end on time; cell phones/electronic devices may NOT be used in lieu of a watch.
  • Open and close the waterfront according to the camp procedures.
  • Ensure the waterfront area is orderly prior to ending shift (pick up kick boards, neckbands, lifejackets, rescue equipment, pull buoys and ropes, check safety equipment, etc.).
  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness of waterfront and camp facility throughout the shift.
  • Cooperate and interact with all members, staff, program participants, and volunteers in a professional, courteous, and friendly manner.
  • Demonstrate and model the YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.
  • Attend required Abuse Risk Management training and adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follow mandated abuse reporting procedures.
  • Perform other job-related duties as may be assigned periodically by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification.
  • Must have a CPR/AED and First Aid Certification OR get certified within 90 days of employment.
  • Current certification in First Aid.
  • Current waterfront certifications (YMCA or Red Cross)
  • Be able to pass the YMCA swim test, as administered by the Waterfront Coordinator.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of the YMCA and its capacity to build strong kids, families, and communities. The ability to articulate and model the YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibilities are essential.
  • The satisfactory performance of the incumbent will result in a consistently high-quality summer camp program which ensures the health and safety of all campers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


This work requires the following physical activities: climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing for extended periods of time, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, feeling, hearing, and visual acuity (with the aid of glasses if necessary). The work is performed primarily outdoors and may require occasional travel. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.


COMPANY BENEFITS:


Free membership and 25% discount for programs and camp fees for the duration of the season.


HOURLY PAY RATE: $16.50 to $18.50


WORK SCHEDULE: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
