Status: Exempt - Management


Summary

The Building Service 32BJ Legal Services Fund provides legal representation to over 100,000 Local 32BJ members and their dependents and to covered retirees and their spouses. The Legal Fund also administers the 32BJ North Legal Services Fund covering members working in the Bronx and the service trades. As part of the Immigration Team, the Supervising Paralegal will play an instrumental role in helping clients navigate the citizenship process and supporting our full-scope family immigration practice.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct and assist with client interviews and follow up appointments as needed
  • Handling an individual case load of Naturalization and Green Card Renewal cases
  • Work closely with clients to gather and organize supporting documentation as well as case administration
  • Handling complex Naturalization and Green Card Renewal cases including filing and reviewing FOIAs with various agencies and reviewing and analyzing criminal dispositions and statutes
  • Reviewing, analyzing and drafting memoranda regarding family based immigration legal issues
  • Drafting memoranda and risk letters regarding the pros and cons of moving forward with particular filings
  • Reviewing N-400s and I-90s as prepared by Paralegals
  • Conduct research on immigration law and procedures
  • Prepare draft correspondence and memoranda
  • Track the status of filings and inform the client and attorney of required next steps
  • Prepare immigration forms and related documents for filing with USCIS, the National Visa Center and other Immigration courts and agencies
  • Work with attorneys and other stakeholders on all aspects of case management
  • Maintain accurate time records of all work performed
  • Update case files timely, including, insertion of notes, correspondence and file records; scanning documents and complete other physical and ministerial duties as necessary to maintain client files
  • Meeting with, reviewing, analyzing and resolving individual client complaints/issues regarding the handling of cases
  • Reviewing intake procedures and scheduling and meets with the intake staff to ensure efficient and timely scheduling of intakes and appointments for Paralegals
  • Meets regularly with the Supervising Attorney
  • Conducts case reviews with Paralegals with the Supervising Attorney
  • Regularly reviews and discusses reports regarding eligibility and case lists with Paralegals
  • Provides coaching and feedback to paralegals in consultation with Supervising Attorney
  • Assist in the scheduling and preparation of Immigration seminars with the Supervising Attorney
  • Reviews job postings for Paralegals and conducts interviews with the Supervising Attorney
  • Reviews and assesses training needs for Paralegals with the Supervising Attorney
  • Reviews and makes recommendations regarding the development, implementation and modification of the procedures of the Immigration department
  • Ability to read, write and translate documents from English to Spanish and Spanish to English
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Exhibit conscientiousness, dedication and a sense of responsibility
  • Must have a professional, cooperative, positive and flexible attitude
Qualifications
  • B.A Degree minimum
  • Minimum three years’ experience as a Paralegal handling naturalization and family-based Immigration
  • 1 year of supervisory or team lead experience is desirable
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency
  • Excellent oral, research, writing, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple complex tasks.
  • Ability to convene and lead meetings.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a highly collaborative team environment.
  • Pro bono, government, public service, and academic experience is desirable, but not required.
  • Ability to work in a fast‐paced environment.
  • Adept with MS365 and computer assisted legal resources
  • Notary Public License preferred, but not required
