Curator of Exhibits

Beloit College seeks a full-time Curator of Exhibits for the Logan Museum of Anthropology, an AAM accredited museum, to begin no later than July 2024.

The Curator of Exhibits is responsible for developing and implementing the Logan Museum of Anthropology's exhibits and programs, which draw on the Museum's extensive collections. The Curator works closely with the Director, faculty, and students to develop and maintain the museum as an excellent teaching and learning resource for the College and community. The Curator teaches in the Museum Studies program and supervises students and interns. The Curator reports to the Director. This is a twelve-month, full-time administrative, exempt position.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Leads and coordinates the museum's exhibit schedule and outreach programs, including:
   • Create and maintain, in collaboration with the Director, a long-range exhibit schedule that maximizes collaboration with students and faculty and addresses College and museum strategic priorities.
   • Curate and/or co-curate, design, fabricate and install in-person and online exhibits.
   • Develop and/or deliver educational and interpretive tours and programs for the campus and community.
   • Collaborate with campus partners, including the Wright Museum of Art, on exhibits and programming.
   • Respectfully handle and access collection items and information while balancing preservation, access, and legal requirements.
   • Promote exhibits and programs on the museum's website and collaborate with Communications and Marketing on press releases.
   • Evaluate exhibit and program effectiveness and relevance.
   • Maintain exhibit files and database records.

1. Manage the museum's visiting curator program, including: faculty and Indigenous curators.
   • Develop programmatic priorities, practices, and schedules.
   • Manage visiting curatorship logistics and budget.Collaborate with visiting curators to curate and install exhibits and deliver programs.

1. Teach one course per year in Museum Studies and supervise special projects and honors terms.
2. Assist and collaborate with faculty and students using collections as curricular resources and update collection records as needed.
3. Train and supervise students, volunteers, and interns in tasks related to exhibits and programming efforts.
4. Write or co-write grant proposals for external funds to support exhibits and related programming as needed.
5. Develop and revise exhibit related policies, plans, and procedures as needed.
6. Maintain professional competence in the museum field.
7. Perform other duties as assigned.

Credentials and Experience:

1. A. or M.S. in anthropology, museum studies, or a related field required.
2. Three years of prior museum experience, preferably in academic museums, required.
3. Teaching experience, broadly defined, required.
4. Advanced knowledge of the theory, practice, and ethics of exhibition development, design, installation, and accessibility preferred.
5. Record of developing innovative, relevant, and engaging exhibitions on a range of anthropological topics preferred.
6. Project and budget management, exhibit design, and interpretive writing skills required.
7. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and community members, including Indigenous communities preferred.
8. Proficiency in online exhibit and collections management software programs and design software, including Wix, SketchUp, and the Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
9. Mechanical ability in exhibit mount construction, gallery lighting, and conservation considerations required.
10. Essential functions of this job may include bending, stooping, lifting, climbing stairs and ladders, and working with power tools and equipment.
