@Orchard LLC is actively seeking to engage an experienced Discovery Center Coordinator in support of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary’s (MBNMS) Coastal Discovery Center (CDC). The Coastal Discovery Center’s (CDC) function provides interpretation, education, and outreach about natural and cultural resources in coastal California, from Cambria to Big Sur.

As the Coastal Discovery Center Coordinator, you will:
  • Oversees the operations of a public visitor center including volunteer staffing, programs, building use, and building maintenance.
  • Provides oversight of the docent and education programs.
  • Coordinates recruitment from northern San Luis Obispo County communities to encourage docent sign ups, designing and implementing a successful docent training and retention program.
  • Operate the CDC, Friday – Sunday, identify docent gaps and seek replacements, including special open dates.
  • Coordinate docent training for CDC 1-2 times per year. Coordinate quarterly docent enrichments and docent appreciation events.
  • Develop, recruit for, deliver, and assess docent training, coordinate volunteer manual with other MBNMS volunteer programs and assist in delivery of the 4-6 week training program.
  • Coordinate and deliver school field trip education programs at the Center, maintain all program equipment and supplies, repairs, and replacement.
  • Communicate field trip specifics and logistics to education docents, lead field trip programs on site, and maintain program data and reporting requirements.
  • Schedule and coordinate Discovery Saturday public programming, 1-3 times per month.
  • Track outputs, analyze, and evaluate the effectiveness of programs to meet established goals and objectives.
  • Support MBNMS programs such Snapshot Day and Get Into Your Sanctuary, and other community events.
  • Respond to public email questions and requests.
  • Attend appropriate ONMS meetings with regard to visitor center services and volunteer coordination.

Your background will include the following.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in biology or a field of study relating to the specific task order and 2 years of experience in marine education or interpretive programs.
  • Knowledge of physical and biological sciences, sanctuary regulations, and educational approaches related to environmental management and policy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to motivate individuals.
  • Able to attend to details, effectively prioritize a variety of competing tasks under strict timelines, and meet multiple deadlines and approval processes.
  • Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must also demonstrate proficiency with Mac and/or Windows platforms.
  • Ability to assess problems and recommend actions.
  • Must work on-site and work at least one weekend day per week.
