Mate

Supervises unlicensed deck personnel engaged in cleaning, chipping, scraping, wire brushing, and painting decks, sides and superstructure; polishing metal work; and operating and maintaining deck gear, safety equipment, rigging, and other equipment. Inspects and tests equipment to ensure safe and proper operation; inspects work areas and crew quarters for cleanliness. Directs security of cargo, deck gear, and lines preparatory to leaving port and supervises handling of mooring lines and gangway when ship docks or undocks. In addition, when assigned to watch duties, also stands navigational watch, watches for obstructions in path of ship, steers ship; and directs security procedures. USCG Captain/Mate license required.
