Job Summary:

The Cash Accounting Clerk is responsible for performing the day-to-day cash account general ledger reconciliation duties. This includes but is not limited to the following: Pulling cash activity for all cash accounts, Identify encounter level payment information using remittance advice or explanation of benefits, and reconciling all cash on a daily basis to ensure all accounting entries are correct.

Job Relationships:

  1. Directly responsible to Controller
  2. Works closely with Business Office Manager, Billing department, and CFO

Occupational Hazards:

Works in the general hospital setting. May be exposed to blood, body fluids, or tissues as well as patients in varying stages of infectious states.

Samples of Duties:

The information listed below is meant to serve as samples of job duties and responsibilities for positions in this classification. This list is neither inclusive nor exclusive, but indicative of several types of duties performed.

  • Pull deposit detail for each bank account.
  • Acquire the explanation of benefits or remittance advice for these deposits.
  • Run a daily Cerner payment posting report.
  • Determine what payments from the bank were applied vs. unapplied.
  • Complete daily reconciliation process to ensure all payments received have been applied using standard templates.
  • Partner with AR team to apply unposted payments that were identified as unapplied.
  • Perform special projects as directed by the CFO and Controller.
  • Conduct Hospital business in an ethical and lawful manner, and is willing to report any knowledge of real or potential fraud or abuse according to the NIH Compliance Code of Conduct.
  • Prepares and retains records, files, and reports in accordance with facility policies and standards forms.
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • The Mission, Vision, and Values of Northern Inyo Healthcare District;
  • NIHD policies and procedures, including Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, and Confidentiality standards;
  • NIHD safety policies and procedures, including the Rainbow Chart, Employee Health, and Infection Prevention standards;
  • Healthcare billing including payment posting and reconciliation.
  • Cerner CommunityWorks revenue cycle module.

Skills/Abilities to:

  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with NIHD staff and the public;
  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships with NIHD staff at all levels as well as the public;
  • Develop and maintain a high degree of maturity, integrity, and good judgement.
  • Effective problem solving, critical thinking, conflict management, time management and teamwork;
  • Computer skills including EMR navigation, General Ledger Software, and advanced Microsoft excel skills;
  • Communicates effectively and has strong presentation skills;
  • Works independently using project management skills;
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment under tight deadlines.
  • Builds strong working relationships and has exceptional leadership skills.
