Sonoma Specialty Hospital, as the county’s only Long-Term Acute Care Hospital, is dedicated to caring for patients that require an extended acute care stay due to severe illness or catastrophic injury. We accept patients from the ICU, Step-Down and Telemetry units of partner hospitals and continue their care for as long as 45 days. This care focuses on the challenges of getting patients off of ventilator support, healing severe wounds, aiding their recovery following surgical procedures, and providing rehabilitation to speed their return to daily life. Our Hospital provides ICU, Surgical, and Step-Down care with dialysis, multi-specialty therapies and ongoing planning for the patient’s transition back home or into a lower level of care. Job Summary: 

Under general supervision of the Lab Manager, Medical Technologists (CLS) and the Lead Lab Assistant, the technician assumes the responsibility for performing phlebotomy appropriately and efficiently, under the philosophy, policies and procedures established by the hospital and the laboratory department. To assure that the highest degree of quality patient care is maintained at all times, the technician should be able to demonstrate skill and accuracy in obtaining specimens for all age groups serviced; maintain inter and intra departmental communications via telephone, fax, and reception desk; maintain effective and cooperative relationships with other personnel throughout the hospital; observe safety, infection control, and risk management policies and procedures; participate in continuing education programs and related professional activities; perform any duties and functions necessary to the efficient and quality operation of the department; controls supply usage; and demonstrates computer skills. Additionally, the lab assistant is to assist in the operation and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment and perform other duties as directed by the CLS on duty.


Education, Training and Licenses Required: 

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Current CPT License for State of California.


Experience Required:

  • 1-2 years Phlebotomy experience preferred
  • Acute care setting experience preferred


Responsibilities:

  • Perform venipunctures and capillary punctures on patients. 
  • Collect and label blood samples accurately according to established procedures.
  • Ensure proper handling and transportation of specimens to the laboratory.
  • Maintain accurate patient records, including updating electronic medical records (EMR) with relevant data.
  • Prepare specimens for testing and processing, ensuring they meet laboratory standards.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection control measures.
  • Provide excellent patient care, including explaining procedures to patients and addressing any concerns.
  • Assist with inventory management and ordering of supplies as needed.
  • Support the laboratory team with other duties as required.

 

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge:

  • Certain level of retention.
  • Command of English language
  • Computer skills  
  • Operate minimal level analyzers.
