Job Summary

The Chemist is responsible for the quality testing program in the QA Analytical and Packaging Labs. This position oversees instrumentation, lab operations, product specifications/formulas and procedures. The Chemist will also work directly with the 1st shift QA supervisor, serve as a backup to that position and assist the QA Manager with general department needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • This position will specialize in instrumentation and testing methods; research new methods and instrumentation; attend off site training and stay current with industry standards
  • Provide technical and maintenance support to existing and new technologies/equipment in order to assure that both operations and quality parameters are being met.
  • Facilitate continuous improvement quality efforts within business units in the brewery by providing expertise with regards to quality processes.
  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment; coordinate/delegate calibrations and maintenance with other team members or lab technicians.
  • Track lab supply inventory, order supplies and instruments as needed; work toward efficient budgeting of QA supply and equipment ordering.
  • Review yearly QA capital improvement plan with QA Manager and address future needs.
  • Conduct method development and validation; create and update procedures as needed; coordinate training with other team members and lab technicians
  • Review daily control data and trend analysis of both products and equipment.
  • Review product formulations and specifications; communicate with other departments, customers and suppliers regarding new product specifications, methods and testing needs.
  • Conduct standard and non-standard chemical and physical analysis on different types of samples as needed for new products or investigations into deviations.
  • Be flexible in work hours in order to support instrumentation or outside representative needs.
  • Coach team members on quality checks and monitor/address check completion levels.
  • Ensure compliance with Internal, Federal, State and local guidelines and regulations including GMP, HACCP, OSHA, FDA and TTB.
  • Maintain documentation such as instrument log books, electronic data, laboratory notebooks, laboratory software.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Quality Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an applicable science (Biology, Food Science, Chemistry, etc.) is required.
  • Minimum of 4 years of practical, hands-on brewery, production, or laboratory work is preferred.
  • Experience in a quality department in food manufacturing, brewing or processing environment including interactions with customers/vendors is preferred.
  • Experience with lab instrumentation, method and standard operating procedure development.
  • Excellent communication, planning, and technical skills.
  • Strong leadership and team skills.
  • Good judgment and common sense
