Director of Specialty Coffee

Job Description

We’re looking to hire a Full-Time, experienced Director of Specialty Coffee to join our dedicated Production Team. We’re looking for someone passionate about specialty coffee, experienced in craft coffee roasting, a leader in consistency & quality control with strong sensory abilities, and excited to impact a growing industry. Job Responsibilities

• Coffee Roasting, Roasted Coffee Quality Control, Education, and Sourcing
  • Responsible for managing day-to-day roasting operations. Responsible for recruiting, onboarding, training, and supervising a team of roasters and roasted coffee packaging team members.
  • Develops roasted coffee production schedule and manages all staff working in roasted coffee production and packaging. 
  • Maintains meticulous roasting logs. Validates logs for accuracy. 
  • Leads development of roasted coffee quality standards and procedures, and ensures all final roasted coffee products meet Company quality standards.
  • Develop new blends to bring to market to advance company goals.
  • Develop roast profiles for single-origin coffees and blends.
  • Develops and leads regular cuppings across the company to ensure quality control.
  • Leads coffee education initiatives across the company, establishing training programs for new and existing employees.
  • Represents Commonwealth Joe at select specialty coffee trade shows.
  • Responsible for sourcing specialty green coffee including forecasting, maintaining strong supplier relationships, and establishing and fulfilling coffee contracts.
     
• Coffee Roasting Equipment Maintenance, Safety and Cleanliness of Working Environment
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and hygienic environment adhering to strict food safety standards. Ensures all roasted coffee and packaging team members use PPE and safety protocols for cleaning, packaging, and quality testing. 
  • Maintains excellent cleanliness and general housekeeping practices on a daily and weekly basis.
  • Responsible for overseeing thorough maintenance schedules and repairs for roasted coffee equipment, coordinating with equipment manufacturer technicians as needed. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, coffee roaster, commercial coffee grinder, weigh-and-fill-machines (i.e. coffee dosers), and bag sealers.

• Roasted Coffee Packaging and Order Fulfillment
  • Responsible for complete, timely, and accurate fulfillment of all orders of roasted coffee according to set service standards across all channels: e-commerce, cafe, bulk roasted coffee orders (wholesale, office, and brewing partners), grocery, and roasted coffee used for cold brew production.
  • Responsible for accurately weighing, labeling, and bagging whole bean coffee, and grinding the coffee to order when applicable.
  • Responsible for maintaining grind coarseness consistency for ground-to-order e-commerce orders as well as roasted coffee for cold brew. 
  • Adhering to existing operating procedures, and developing improved procedures where applicable, to package coffee and fulfill customer orders.
  • Recommends equipment to purchase to improve roasting and whole bean coffee processing - recommendations to be approved by the Director of Production.
     
• Inventory Management & Procurement
  • Responsible for weekly inventory management of supplies related to roasted coffee production, including, but not limited to, green coffee, coffee labels, coffee packaging supplies, corrugate (cardboard boxes), coffee maintenance equipment, etc.
    • Inventory management includes keeping count of materials on hand for each item and ordering resupply as needed to replenish inventory.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely end-of-month inventory counts required for Accounting.
