Under general supervision, performs manual and machine operator tasks in the set-up, maintenance and operation of a printing press. Operates all areas of plate, reel and pressroom functions, and does routine maintenance. Mixes inks and follows color procedures, cleans press units’ folders, reels, cylinders, blankets, and rollers. May work odd shifts as requested and performs other daily duties as assigned.

· Reads instructions and sets up the press based on instructions.

· Ensures day-to-day quality of the finished newspaper. Sets ink density to NAA standards and Graybar standards. Check ads for accuracy, color lay-down and registration. Check page numbers and publication date. Check continuous quality of newspapers coming off the conveyor.

· Perform day-to-day make ready procedures to include spot and hang plates properly to ensure quality registration. Clean and set ink fountains as needed for the run. Clean rollers. Run webs. Set up and grease folder for straight or collect run. Wash blankets after a run. Change blankets and press rollers as needed.

· Operates and directs operation of printing press to meet with daily schedules.

· Clean and set up ink fountains as needed for daily runs.

· May supervise press helper trainee from time to time.

· Performs preventative maintenance on press such as: lubrication replacement of small parts, cleaning and minor adjustments and other moving parts. Punch, burn, and bend plates for the press.

· Reads MSDS sheets. See to proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals.

· Assures proper set up reel room for scheduled pressroom. Assists in cleaning up and keeping immediate work area neat and clean.

· Experienced press operators – perform daily console operation as assigned. Supervise and train press and reel room crews. Double check quality of outgoing papers. Adjust color for best registry. Facilitate communication among plate room, pressroom, and reel room. Perform record keeping tasks.

· Will be required to train on all tasks in the pressroom and reel room to rotate to all jobs on an as needed basis.

· Performs other tasks as needed or requested. Must be willing to work shift schedule to include nights and weekends.

Requirements:

Skills, Education, and Experience: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

· Knowledge of or ability to learn all aspects of operating all equipment in the press area efficiently (including reel room, console, etc.).

· Knowledge of or ability to learn all aspects of ink mixing and process color changes.

· Skills in communication and ability to work in close proximity to other employees for extended periods time.

· Basic mechanical skills required.

· Ability to function as a self-starter in performing routine work.

· Ability to work under deadline driven conditions.

· A daily desire to contribute to a positive work environment.

· High School Diploma, Vocational School, GED or equivalent preferred

· Two years of reel room or mechanical press experience preferred


Language Skills:

Verbal and written communication skills in English adequate to follow verbal and written instructions.
