POSITION SUMMARY:

Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Position is identified as safety sensitive and subjected to required, random drug testing as scheduled.
  • Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  • Performs pool chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action.
  • Performs all maintenance and cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
  • Works collectively with the director to ensure the needs of the department are met.
  • Adheres to all YMCA of Montclair policies, procedures, rules, regulations and best practices, including emergency and safety procedures, and supports the associations’ philanthropy efforts.
  • Position is identified as safety sensitive and subjected to required, random drug testing as scheduled.
  • Assist in all assigned areas and completes all projects and assignments as assigned by supervisor.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.
  • Attend required Abuse Risk Management training and adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follow mandated abuse reporting procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • American Red Cross or YMCA currently certified Lifeguard
  • Lifeguard Certification Required
  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding
  • Oxygen Administration certification
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Complete Bloodborne pathogens course annually
  • Maintain all required certifications (active)


WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
  • Must be able to remain alert.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
  • Ability to work inside and outside (environments include humidity, heat, cold, wet and inclement weather conditions)
  • Must be able to lift and pull 50 pounds
