Berkeley, United States Astera Institute Full time
Job DescriptionJob DescriptionAbout Us:

Astera is a 501(c)(3) private operating foundation on a mission to help lead humanity’s transition to a scientifically advanced, abundant future. In service of this mission, we support the creation of public goods for science and technology, such as open, non-proprietary infrastructure, tools, datasets, and standards. You can read about our mission and vision here.

Central to this mission is our new residency program, which aims to become the premier home for talented scientists and entrepreneurs pursuing high-impact, open science and technology development. The opportunity for residents will include: a salary for one year to investigate an important problem and potential solutions; additional funding for a team, lab, licenses, or whatever else is appropriate after a solution worth exploring has been identified; an incubation program providing training in how to be a scientist-entrepreneur; access to our fundraising networks and opportunities to pitch us and others for follow-on funding; and the chance to join a community of exceptionally talented individuals operating in an environment optimized for experimentation, collaboration, and the pursuit of ambitious projects for the benefit of humanity.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a Director of the Residency Program to lead and scale our flagship initiative. This role will be pivotal in identifying and supporting the best mission-aligned talent worldwide, and providing them with unprecedented support and freedom to operate. The Director will oversee the selection, development, and success of residents, ensuring the program contributes significantly to Astera’s mission.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead strategic planning for the Residency Program, in collaboration with the CEO. You will manage the program’s budget, ensuring effective allocation of resources to support residents and their projects.

  • Identify, recruit, and select top talent for the program, focusing on individuals with exceptional scientific or technical ability, an entrepreneurial mindset, and commitment to public-goods science.

  • Develop and oversee our incubation programming, providing training and resources to residents on how to be successful scientist-entrepreneurs.

  • Monitor and evaluate the progress and impact of residency projects, providing guidance and support to ensure successful outcomes. You will be responsible for facilitating the integration of residents into the broader Astera community and supporting their transition to post-residency opportunities.

Qualifications

To work with us, you must:

  1. Feel comfortable communicating candidly and giving and receiving constructive feedback.

  2. Be demonstrably committed to continuous professional growth at every stage of development.

  3. Thrive in a startup-like environment, and understand that trying to quickly scale an organization that’s doing something novel requires flexibility and adaptation at the individual level.

  4. Embrace the unique opportunity and responsibility we have to leverage our resources to build something truly extraordinary – have no concept of “good enough.”

  5. Recognize the critical role of culture in building a high-performing organization, and enthusiastically participate in setting, communicating, and reinforcing that culture.

  6. Wholeheartedly embrace our mission to pioneer new ways to advance scientific and technological progress for public benefit.

  7. Operate with the highest levels of integrity and judgment, with a strong commitment to transparency and accountability.

In addition, we’re looking for a combination of:

  1. Proven experience in managing complex programs, preferably within an entrepreneurial environment. Prior experience running a fellowship or residency program is a plus.

  2. Experience in building out operational support for young companies, for instance via a platform role at a VC firm.

  3. A demonstrated ability to identify and draw talent from unfamiliar fields and networks.

  4. A strong background in science, technology, or a related field, with a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in these areas.

Location:

This role is in person in Berkeley, California.

Compensation:

The successful candidate will receive a competitive compensation package, commensurate with their experience.
