The Monell Chemical Senses Center was founded in 1968 as the world’s first nonprofit scientific institute devoted exclusively to basic research on the chemical senses: taste, smell, and chemosensory irritation. Research at Monell contributes to a wide range of scientific and practical knowledge. With more than fifty Ph.D.-level scientists, the Center is making major progress toward understanding how the chemical senses function and their importance in everyday life. The Center is located in the University City area of Philadelphia.

Monell is looking for a new Staff Accountant who will be responsible for various accounting tasks, including but not limited to, maintaining financial records, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and analyzing budgets. Attention to detail, analytical skills, and understanding of accounting principles will be essential in supporting the finance team and contributing to the overall success of the organization.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Review and process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts on a regular basis.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets and forecasts, including variance analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Assist with internal and external audits, providing necessary documentation and explanations.
  • Participate in month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, discrepancies, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support financial reporting and decision-making.
  • Provide support for ad-hoc financial projects and initiatives as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, preferred but not required. Open to equivalent years of experience.
  • CPA certification or progress towards certification preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in accounting or finance roles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (e.g., MIP, QuickBooks, SAP).
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with team members across departments.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and analysis.
