JOB SUMMARY
This is skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy gasoline and diesel driven automotive and other mechanical equipment. Work involves responsibility for the performance of skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, heavy duty trucks, tractors, graders, sweepers, and standard and special automotive and mechanical equipment in accordance with standard trade practices. Work is performed under general supervision and requires independence as to method of repair after receiving oral instructions or written work orders.

ILLUSTRATIVE JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or logical assignment to the class.

1. Follows checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially troublesome areas.
2. Performs routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications, and tune-ups on City automobiles, light and heavy duty trucks and other mechanical equipment.
3. Disassembles units and inspects parts for wear using micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
4. Repairs and services air conditioning, heating, engine-cooling, and electrical systems.
5. Repairs or replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings.
6. Rewires ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels, etc.
7. Repairs, replaces or overhauls clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes and other auxiliary equipment such as starters, generators, hydraulic pumps, and related equipment.
8. Inspects and tests equipment at prescribed intervals of time and usage or upon malfunction or breakdown.
9. Disassembles, inspects, and replaces worn or broken parts. Fits and adjusts new or repaired parts.
10. Test drives repaired equipment.
11. May drive facility tow truck to retrieve vehicles that break down away from the facility (Jump/Recovery)
12. Uses hoist, wrenches, gauges, drills or grinders, or other specialized auto mechanic tools and equipment.
13. Fuels, oils, and greases motor vehicles and changes filters.
14. Notifies supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and what corrective action should be taken.
15. Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and parts including valves, pistons, main bearing assemblies and cooling, fuel and exhaust components.
16. Performs field or shop inspections of automotive or mechanical equipment to determine repair needs or estimate repair costs; makes field repairs when possible.
17. Occasionally works with other City departments on special projects.
18. Performs occasional metal work by cutting, welding, and other procedures.
19. Performs other related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:
• Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel equipment engines and the mechanical repair of heavy duty trucks and construction equipment.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the work.
• Electronic diagnostic equipment and digital manuals and reference materials required.

Ability to:
• Adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
• Interpret and work from sketches, CAD drawings and diagrams.
• Solve complex problems.
• Work effectively under time constraints and pressure.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the both the public and other City employees.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Work independently and as part of a team to effectively to meet day-to-day operational deadlines.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Must be willing and able to be on call during regular work week, including weekends, and to report for work after hours if needed.
• Locate, correct, and adjust defects in complex automotive and mechanical equipment.
• Observe safety principles and work in a safe manner.
• Operate personal computer and/or laptop with scanning and diagnostic software.

MIMIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
• High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
• A minimum of 2 years' experience in engine mechanic, electrical systems, brakes, steering, and suspension or completion of a recognized automotive training program in high school or at a technical, trade, community or junior college.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver's license, CDL with A endorsement preferred.
o Must possess and maintain State of Michigan certifications in the following repair categories. Automobile and light truck repair

▪ Front End, Suspension & Steering Systems
▪ Brakes & Braking Systems
▪ Electrical Systems
▪ Heating & Air Conditioning
• Must obtain and maintain State of Michigan certification as a Master Heavy-duty Truck Mechanic within 24 months of job acceptance.
• Must provide own tools and tool box.
• Skill in the use and care of tools used in the automotive and mechanical repair work.
• Must have and wear protective footwear (steel-toe or equivalent) per MIOSHA regulations at all times, and all footwears must meet federal standards.
