GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the general supervision of Team Lead or Program Director, this position is responsible to counsel and aid clients, having a behavioral health diagnosis with possible co-occurring substance abuse disorder and criminal justice involvement. Advocates for and guides clients through court appearances, assisting clients in understanding and completing program requirements established by the mental health court.

This is an at-will direct service position within the programs and is responsible for assisting members in meeting their expressed goals, while living in the community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

  • Assists clients in understanding the levels of choice in the Mental Health Court process.
  • Advocates for clients in all areas of treatment and across settings.
  • Meets with clients in jail, hospital or residence as indicated.
  • Accompanies clients to all court related proceedings or meetings.
  • Refers clients to other support services as needed, such as medical evaluation/treatment, housing and employment services.
  • Assists clients with obtaining proof of illness or other situation, in the event of unavoidable absence from court related meetings.
  • Keeps treatment team informed regarding all pertinent information related to court proceedings.
  • Monitors condition of clients to evaluate success of treatment.
  • Interacts productively within the team in order to provide case management services to an identified group of clients.
  • Provides “on-the-spot” counseling that is both helpful to the clients and consistent with the philosophy of the program.
  • Attends to the safety, health, and well being of clients.
  • Prepares and completes reports and all other paperwork as assigned in a timely manner.
  • Provides after hours, “on-call” coverage to program clients.
  • Transports clients and drives on program business using personal vehicle or company vehicle.
  • Provides support to other staff members as needed.
  • Attends all team and agency staff meetings unless approval for non-attendance is secured by the Team Leader or the Program Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM:

Associates Degree in Social Work or related field and a minimum of four (4) years varied experience as a consumer of mental health services or as a provider of mental health services. Equivalent experience as either a consumer or family member of a person with behavioral health diagnosis and/or criminal justice involvement may be substituted for the educational requirement.

OPTIMUM:

Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or related field and two (2) years experience as a provider of mental health services or related court experience. Equivalent experience as either a consumer or family member of a person with behavioral health diagnosis and/or criminal justice involvement may be substituted for the educational requirement.

LICENSES; CERTIFICATES; SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid California driver’s license & current vehicle insurance/registration.
  • Reliable means of transportation capable of passing vehicle safety inspection if more than five years old excluding all modes of two-wheeled transport inclusive of bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles.

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
