GENERAL FUNCTION:

Under the direct supervision of the Branch Executive Director, the Aquatic Director is directly responsible for all aspects of the Aquatics program. This position also assumes responsibility for certain safety and risk management functions.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directly responsible for ensuring the safety of pool users during pool operating hours; ensures adequate staffing.
  • Oversees and ensures all safety and training; monitors ongoing safety requirements for compliance with established guidelines; conducts regular safety meetings and observations for safety/performance purposes.
  • Maintains all aquatic facilities according to Health Department specifications, YMCA National Guidelines, and Jeff Ellis & Associates.
  • Ensures water quality of the pool, cleanliness of the pool and surrounding area; inspect and maintain pool equipment to ensure the highest level of quality.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and provide development for qualified staff and volunteers.
  • Plan, develop, and work within an annual budget of income and expense emphasizing income production and expense control.
  • Supervises and ensures appropriate scheduling of pool time.
  • Develops new aquatic programming; monitors and ensures program quality, program growth, and financial stability.
  • Coordinates and oversees CPR & First Aid training for staff.
  • Reviews, processes, and follows up on member and employee incident reports; may make recommendations for safety improvements.
  • Chairs safety committee
  • May perform increased safety & risk management duties during the aquatics program slow season.

  • Other duties as assigned.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: May directly supervise up to 30 staff members. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work, evaluating performance, rewarding and disciplining employees.

Requirements:

The following certifications and skills are strongly desired:

  • YMCA Lifeguard and/or Jeff Ellis & Associates Lifeguard
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • First Aid
  • YMCA Pool Operator
  • YMCA Water Fitness Instructor, YMCA Skipper and Progressive Instructor
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years prior experience in pool facility management preferred, or an adequate combination of education and experience.
  • A proven track record of successful fiscal management and budget preparation
  • Strong supervisory/leadership skills and the ability to effectively discipline, counsel, and evaluate job performance.
  • Computer literate; working knowledge of Microsoft Office, e-mail and Internet.
  • Ability to work independently and utilize initiative, ability to be organized and to meet deadlines.
  • Good judgment and solid decision making skills; strong oral and written communication skills; excellent customer service skills; and an attitude of professionalism and respect.
  • Ability to interact well with all levels of members, staff, management, and Board of Directors.
  • Ability to handle occasional stressful conditions, react calmly in emergency situations, and work irregular hours.
  • Sensitivity to, understanding, and support of the YMCA mission and core values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be alert at ALL times and be attentive to the activity within the pool area.. The employee is regularly required to hear, walk, and stand. The employee is occasionally required to sit for extended periods of time and be exposed to chlorinated water and sun and endure other weather conditions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust and focus.


EFFECT ON END RESULT: This position has a direct impact on the overall effectiveness with which the YMCA accomplishes its goals and objectives. The effectiveness of the Aquatic Director will be evaluated annually. General performance will be evaluated as follows: knowledge of job, achievement of planned results, relations with fellow employees, quality or work, attendance record and attitude. Achievement of specific objectives outlined above will also be assessed. A positive attitude and a high level of enthusiasm should be exhibited while performing duties.
