JOB SUMMARY

The Substance Abuse Counselor provides drug and alcohol counseling to adult clients who are receiving clinically managed low intensity and high intensity residential services based on ASAM level and/or sub-acute withdrawal management services. Substance abuse treatment under a residential substance abuse and or withdrawal management duties include interacting with clients on a day-to-day basis providing individual and group counseling, as well as observation on thirty-minute intervals. The Substance Abuse Counselor provides clients with orientation, training, substance abuse recovery skills and information, and leadership necessary to provide clients with the ability to recover from substance abuse addiction. The Substance Abuse Counselor may be assigned additional counseling duties.

  • Operate and oversee the day to day functions of clinically managed low intensity and high intensity residential and withdrawal management services within program rules and regulations.
  • Observation and documentation of client status including vitals.
  • Maintain a caseload as assigned by the Program Manager. Provide a variety of interventions including individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, collateral services, and other relevant sobriety-related services to clients.
  • Document, review, and chart client progress; Complete all required paperwork, on time.
  • Attend treatment meetings and provides input to treatment plan. Prepares treatment, addiction severity index assessment, and discharge plans and discharge summaries, Guide clients with relapse prevention plan.
  • Designate new target goals for clients consistent with overall treatment goals while in residential treatment and/or withdrawal management.
  • Initiate appropriate and timely interventions.
  • Integrate the clinical concept with sound theoretical and practical applications of rehabilitative and individual group and milieu counseling principles.
  • Provide input to develop and improve program servicing and delivery.
  • Set daily goals.
  • Ensure clients are informed of responsible/respectful behavior and are informed and adhere to rules and regulations of the program.
  • Assist other staff in de-escalating client behavioral concerns.
  • Schedule daily activity and recreational activities and short-term special groups.
  • Facilitates groups as assigned by Program Supervisor
  • Comply with all MHS and program rules, policies and procedures including HIPPA standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • o Certification through a recognized alcohol and drug certification entity plus two years of experience working with alcohol and drug related issues/addictions, preferred, OR
    • o Actively working toward a recognized alcohol and drug certification and within two years become certified, OR
    • o B.A./B.S. degree in human service field and one year of experience working with alcohol and drug related issues/addictions
  • Working knowledge of California’s DUI program as a provider, required.
  • Must maintain annual AOD certification with certifying board (e.g. CCAPP, CAADE)
  • Per program contact requirements, must satisfactorily complete a Tuberculosis test prior to hire and once annually thereafter.
  • CPR/First Aid certification, required.
  • Ability to produce legible, clear, and concise written documentation
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and EHR software
  • Ability to set priorities, problem solve, and react appropriately to emergency situations
  • Ability to work independently and effectively collaborate with a team
