CATALOG, a Boston-based pioneering startup, is a leader in the field of data storage and computation by harnessing the power of DNA. DNA, known for its millennia-long stability, unrivaled information density, and cost-effective replicability, offers revolutionary potential for latency-tolerant high-density data storage and massively parallel computation.

We're in search of a Scientist or Senior Scientist with expertise in synthetic biology, molecular biology, chemistry, or chemical engineering. In this vital role, you'll contribute to the development of CATALOG’s ground-breaking DNA-based data storage and computation platform. You will collaborate with our dedicated team of computer scientists and biologists, designing novel storage and computing architectures and translating them into scalable chemical operations. Your work will be instrumental in building and optimizing a molecular instruction set that enables the world’s first DNA storage and computing platform.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the design and optimization of scalable molecular operations that process DNA-encoded information, demonstrating your creativity and technical acumen.
  • Design, plan, and execute wet lab experiments to meet project goals and development timelines, showcasing your hands-on expertise and project management skills.
  • Collaborate with hardware, analytics, and software teams to test, model, and optimize molecular operations, demonstrating your ability to work cross-functionally and contribute to diverse objectives.
  • Showcase the technology developed through capability demonstrations to clients.
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed articles and patents, communicating CATALOG’s vision and protecting its intellectual property, demonstrating your excellent communication and strategic thinking skills.
  • Participate in planning and executing CATALOG’s commercialization strategy for building the world’s first DNA-based storage and computing platform, highlighting your forward-thinking mindset and commercial acumen.

We are looking for someone with experience in the following areas:

  • Designing and executing experiments in a molecular biology lab, showcasing a strong foundation in bench work.
  • Theoretical and quantitative understanding of nucleic acid methods, and practical skills to design and implement molecular information processing systems
  • Deep knowledge and experience with cutting-edge synthetic and molecular biology methods, demonstrating an ability to keep up with advances in the field.
  • Excellent experimental design, planning, organization, documentation, and communication skills, showing your ability to conduct research thoroughly and communicate effectively.
  • Familiarity with and interest in information processing in chemical and biological systems, displaying a fascination for interdisciplinary fields.

We are looking for someone driven by:

  • The thrill of building groundbreaking technology, indicating a passion for innovation and advancement.
  • The challenge of solving difficult cross-disciplinary problems, reflecting your ability to tackle complex issues.
  • Creativity and insight at the intersection of biology and information processing, demonstrating your unique perspective and innovative thinking.

You will also need to be able to:

  • Thrive in a changing but supportive environment, showing adaptability and resilience.
  • Work collaboratively in small, cross-disciplinary teams, demonstrating strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Plan and execute independently, indicating your initiative and ability to work without constant supervision.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A required PhD in synthetic biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or a related discipline, showcasing your strong academic background.
  • Breadth of experience in and ability to develop depth in nucleic acid methods, demonstrating a range of technical competencies.
  • Experience in the analysis of experimental data, reflecting your analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Quantitative theory-driven thinking coupled with excellent bench skills.

At CATALOG, we challenge you to think critically, work creatively, and conquer uncharted problems in a groundbreaking field. We believe in building an inclusive team with different points of view. We support and celebrate diversity in our workforce. We offer competitive compensation packages, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) with company matching, and generous PTO.

Note: Even if you don’t meet all of the requirements listed, we encourage you to apply. Think of it more as looking for most of the items listed, not all.
