Job Title: Historic Paint Conservation Specialist

Location: Petersburg, VA

Type of Job: Part-Time

Duties:

  • Conduct paint sampling and analysis, including identifying and documenting complete stratigraphies of paint layers.
  • Perform laboratory analysis and interpretation of paint samples from structures with paint characteristics similar to those at Appomattox Manor.
  • Prepare detailed reports with findings and recommendations for repainting, adhering to historical accuracy.
  • Create paint chronology charts and provide recommendations for restoration colors and techniques.
  • Attend progress meetings and document work completed.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in History and/or Historic Preservation.
  • Five years of professional experience in Historic Paint Analysis and Assessments on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) structures.
  • Demonstrated experience with at least five projects involving paint sampling and identification of complete stratigraphies.
  • Proven experience with at least five projects involving laboratory analysis and interpretation of architectural paint samples.
  • Thorough knowledge of paint sampling techniques and laboratory analysis for NRHP sites.
  • Ability to coordinate with park personnel and work within specified hours.
