We are actively searching for an Oncology Coding Specialist. This position is responsible for the accurate coding of all Oncology/Cancer patient record types. Reviews the medial record to assign accurate, appropriate diagnostic and procedural coding information for accurate E&M level/CPT codes and modifiers/HCPCS codes and any other codes required by the facility and/or payor while maintaining a 98% accuracy rate. Selects and sequences diagnoses and procedures, identifies conditions that can affect payment, and assigns optimum codes in accordance with the latest HCFA/CMS regulations. Interfaces accurate code assignments to the appropriate account number and verifies accurate interfaced data.
Preferred Credentials and Experience:
- Recent or current inpatient or outpatient medical office/clinic coding experience (one year) is required.
- AHIMA credentialed Registered Health Information Administrator, Registered Health Information Technician or RHIT-eligible, Certified Coding Specialist- H or Certified Coding Specialist-H-eligible, Certified Coding Associate is highly preferred for the AGH facility-side coding environment.
- The CCS-eligible employee will be provided a time frame of one year from the date of hire for training and is expected to successfully complete the AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist exam within this time frame.
- The RHIT-eligible employee will be provided a time frame of one year from the date of hire for training and is expected to successfully complete the AHIMA Registered Health Information Technician exam within this time frame.
- The AAPC credentialed Certified Professional Coder with twelve months minimum current HIM/provider office or revenue cycle-related experience is highly preferred for the AGHS provider office-coding environment. The Certified Hematology Oncology Coder credential is highly preferred for the Cancer Center/Oncology coding responsibilities.
- Will consider Registered Nurse with recent successful completion of a medical coding/billing program curriculum or AHIMA coding certification preparatory curriculum. The Registered Nurse employee will be provided a timeframe of two years from the date of hire for additional coding training and is expected to successfully complete the AHIMA Certified Coding Associate or AAPC Certified Professional Coder exam within this time frame.
- Must have college level classes in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, basic disease processes, coding mechanisms, coding guidelines and conventions and regulatory agency guidelines.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Associate degree in Health Information Technology is preferred. Completion of an on-line HIM Coding education with a nationally recognized coding credential is acceptable.
- One year of recent or current acute care hospital coding or medical office coding/billing experience highly preferred.
Other Duties:
Ability to convey information in English, both verbal and written, clearly.
Strong communication skills are needed to convey coding conventions to medical staff.
Must be able to verbally communicate with physicians and physician offices.
Ability to organize and manage time effectively, setting appropriate priorities.
Ability to make independent decisions consistent with policies, procedures and hospital standards.
Must be able to see and read patient medical records and computer screens.
Manual dexterity is required to manipulate computer keyboards and file loose reports on charts. Hearing is a requirement in order to answer telephones and respond to caller needs.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
