About The Duckbill Group
The Duckbill Group is a boutique consulting firm that helps mid-market and enterprise companies optimize and manage their AWS spend. We're not your typical consulting firm - we offer fixed-scope, well-defined engagements with a focus on short, impactful projects (average 8 weeks). We also run industry-leading publications in the AWS space, like Last Week in AWS.
We're on a mission to help more clients in more ways, and you'll play a key role in that growth. This is a remote (anywhere in the US), part-time (7-10 hours/week, potentially growing to 10-15 hours/week) opportunity for a Fractional Head of Delivery to provide strategic leadership and oversight for our FinOps practice.
About the Role
As the Fractional Head of Service Delivery, you'll be responsible for driving excellence in our AWS consulting practice. This includes:
- Building a Winning Team: Lead the recruitment and hiring of FinOps staff (both FTE and contractors).
- Delivery Leadership: Manage our team of FinOps consultants (~3-6 people, contractors and FTEs, mainly engineering-shape), ensuring high-quality project delivery and client satisfaction.
- Technical Expertise: Possess a deep understanding of operating AWS at scale and
- Project Oversight: Oversee 2-4 client engagements at a time, ensuring “best in class” delivery that stays on track and provides exceptional value.
- Quality Champion: Hold our team accountable for delivering high-quality work, exceeding KPIs and white glove service, while continuously working to improve.
- Process Optimization: Identify and implement continuous improvements to our consulting delivery processes and capabilities.
- Executive Presence: You’ll likely end up on calls with CxOs of some of the largest organizations out there.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 8+ years of experience in technology consulting (independent or firm).
- Executive presence and the ability to build strong relationships with clients.
- Proven track record of building and leading high-performing technology teams.
- Deep expertise in AWS technologies at scale.
- Prior experience in managing projects and/or consulting engagements
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team.
- Experience in recruiting and hiring technical talent, with an eye on retention, continuous improvement, and upskilling.
Engineering background and best practices for cost optimization is a plus
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation for this role is $300/hr, though we’re also open to exploring a monthly fixed fee. As this is a contractor role, the role is not eligible for company benefits.

While we might look like a standard boutique consulting firm, we’ve got big dreams and ambitions around how we can serve more clients in more ways. We’re looking to grow and you would be a big part of that.
We believe in a different way of doing consulting:
- We believe protecting the client is paramount.
- We don't bill hourly or percent-of-savings, because both create misalignment between us and our clients.
- We optimize for short, in-and-out engagements over long-term engagements. Our average client engagement lasts only eight weeks.
- We don't do engineering-level implementation work. We stick to higher-level engagements where our value is clear to everyone.
- We don't do custom engagements. Our consulting services look more like a product than a service, in that they are fixed-scope, defined-outcome, defined-process, and standardized pricing. In other words, no scope creep here.
We are not venture-funded and have no intention of becoming so. We’re financed instead by the magic of revenue and profitability.
We are a fully remote company. We’re a company of five employees currently and just over five years old.
