The Master Technician plans, organizes, supervises, and evaluates all vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance tasks performed by Mechanics I, II, and III. This position performs inspections, maintenance and repair to City fleet vehicles and troubleshoots and diagnoses complex mechanical problems.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. A valid driver’s license.
  3. Must possess at least five (5) ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications in either Automotive or Medium/Heavy Duty Truck.
  4. Six (6) years of experience involving the maintenance and repair of plumbing, meter reading equipment or other related equipment.
  5. ASE Master Certified Technician preferred or ability to attain an ASE Master Certification within one (1) year from entering the position.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Utilizes Fleet Management software to create repair orders, make vehicle assessments, research vehicle history, and accurate record keeping.
  • Assists with vehicle/equipment replacement recommendations and condition ratings.
  • Reviews technical, owner's and repair manuals, schematics and drawings to determine manufacturer's recommendations for troubleshooting and preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Serves as first line for quality control of repair work performed in the shop.
  • Assists with new vehicle inventory, install work, and make-ready work.
  • Coordinates outside repairs with vendors and assists with fuel management system.
  • Participates in employee hiring, training, performance assessment, and disciplinary actions.
  • Informs Senior Leadership team of major repair expenditures & vehicle damage.

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade.
  • Equipment and vehicles used throughout the City.
  • City practices, policies and procedures.
  • Department safety practices and procedures.

Skills in:

  • Preparing and maintaining records.
  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
  • Performing the manual labor associated with major mechanical repair work.
  • Preparing and/or process purchase orders.
  • Reading and understanding automotive and mechanical repair manuals used in the repair of automotive machinery.
  • Establishing and maintaining good working relationships with city employees and drivers.
  • Providing exceptional customer service.
  • Using computers and related software.
  • Using and caring of tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

Work is primarily performed in Mechanic Shop. Continuous outdoor and indoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards, occasional kneeling, crawling, carrying up to 100 pounds, lifting up to 100 pounds. Exposed to seasonal temperatures while operating and maintaining heavy construction equipment. Possibility of exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, materials and inclement weather while in the field.
