Job DescriptionJob DescriptionPOSITION SUMMARY:

The CDL Instructor is responsible for instructing students in any combination of classroom lectures, training range maneuvers &/or road training according to the requirements set by the Department of Transportation. The goal is to prepare a student for their Commercial Truck Driver License examination.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Complete a mandatory new instructor training program on “methods of instruction.”
  • Following a set curriculum, present information to groups of students in classroom or online settings.
  • Following a written set of “backing plans,” provide guidance and instruction to students on the training range in order for the students to develop the skills necessary to do required truck maneuvers.
  • Accompany students on the road and provide guidance and verbal instructions in order for the students to learn “shifting skills” and other “on the road” skills required of a commercial truck driver.
  • Evaluate student comprehension of materials and developed driving skills.
  • Identify non-satisfactory performing students and provide additional one-on-one training.
  • Answer student questions and comments.
  • Administer written and practical exams – grade them – provide feedback to the students.
  • Maintain class rosters and take student attendance throughout the shift.
  • Motivate students – Tutor students.
  • Follow all school policies and procedures to ensure safety at all times.
  • Evaluate equipment and report defects expeditiously.
  • Assist with keeping the trucks and the grounds clean and free from snow during the winter months
  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

EDUCATION/ SKILLS: REQUIRED:
  • Must meet the minimum education requirements of all state, federal and accrediting bodies for instructor.
  • State certification/approval as a CDL instructor (if required)
  • Considerable experience in operating Class A vehicles (minimum of 3 years)
  • Possess a valid Class A license
  • Meet all Dept. of Transportation driver qualification file requirements.
  • Demonstration of a genuine concern, as well as a compassion and desire to help people.
  • Advocacy for NETTTS and its programs.
  • Professional attitude and appearance.
  • Patience in working with students and staff.
  • Ability to motivate students and to display enthusiasm for program, for NETTTS, and student’s progress and success.
  • Ability to be articulate and skilled in public speaking.
  • Ability to learn to motivate students and to serve as an advocate for the school and the assigned campus.
  • Sincere desire to help others learn the CDL profession

TRAVEL:

  • Very occasional travel to a workshop or training meeting. No overnight travel is anticipated.

Job Type:

  • Part-Time, Exempt

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Mobility to move around the campus including classroom and lab space. Ability to walk and to lift and move objects, to bend, stretch, and reach, and to stand for extended periods. Ability to communicate clearly. Good eyesight. Stamina to deal with a variety of activities, sometimes under stressful conditions.
