Job Summary:
Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching individual and group swim instruction to the many types to members of the Eccles Health, Wellness, and Athletic Center, located at Westminster University campus. Swim Instructors cover skills and knowledge in a logical progression for aquatic skill development. Depending on the need of the Center, Swim Instructors should be prepared to teach adults as well as children’s Pre-School Aquatic and Learn-to-Swim levels 1 through 6, Parent and Child Aquatics, and Water Safety Outreach Classes.
The Swim Instructor at Westminster University will be asked to assist with other practice groups as needed such as private, semi-private or group swim classes. Rates range from $14.00 to $24.00 per hour depending on the level of class taught by the swim instructor.
Job Responsibilities:
- Incorporate knowledge and application of different teaching styles to the experience, ability and culture of participants so that they can achieve course objectives
- Responsible for preparing the appropriate lesson for the level of class
- Maintaining attendance and evaluation methods of each participant
- Enforce safety regulations and facility policies
- Be proactive in looking for potential dangers and unsafe behaviors
- Working relationships:
- There are generally 2-3 swim instructors working at a time depending on the attendance of the class.
- Swim Instructors are part of the FWRD team which includes multiple student employee positions.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Excellent customer service
- Responsible in nature
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Team Player
- Comprehensive understanding of programs offered through the Fitness, Wellness, and Recreation Department
- Positive and collaborative spirit
- Availability to teach group lessons on weeknight evenings from 5:00 – 8:00 pm and/or Saturday mornings from 9 – 12:00 pm.
Required Course Work or Certification Needed for Position:
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Training
- CPR/AED and First Aid – Required within 3 months of hire
