Position Summary:

The Molecular Technician is responsible for performing all aspects of daily patient testing (i.e. receiving, accessioning, nucleic acid isolations, sample testing, analysis, reporting, etc.) in a clinical molecular laboratory environment. This includes collecting and/or receiving patient specimens, including swabs, tissues, DNA/RNA, body fluids, tissue cassettes and histology slides; operating sophisticated equipment and instruments in a CLIA/CAP laboratory environment to render results/data; and performing instrument maintenance, inventory management, and other tasks and duties related to department performance. This individual may assist in implementing new materials, methods, and equipment for clinical purposes; help develope new technologies and procedures; and participate in documenting and implementing Quality Assurance (QA)/ Quality Control (QC)/Quality Inventory (QI) procedures. Some travel may be necessary. Additional duties assigned.


Key Results Areas (KRAs):

  • Receive, handle, and evaluate specimens received in the department and organize workflow to provide optimum testing efficiency and turnaround time
  • Perform DNA/RNA extraction, purification, hybridization, PCR, and/or sequencing methods on assorted specimen types
  • Perform quality control, validation, and other quality activities to verify performance of clinical assays
  • Utilize and maintain laboratory equipment by following standard operating procedures and policies, performing assigned maintenance activities, and troubleshooting problems as needed
  • Utilize the laboratory information system (LIS) and other programs for sample accessioning, testing, resulting, and other laboratory-related functions.
  • Perform various laboratory skills and activities such as pipetting, diluting, etc.
  • Monitor inventory of supplies and reagents and communicate order needs
  • Record and analyze data for clinical assays, instrument maintenance, and environmental monitoring.
  • Participate in laboratory quality assurance and improvement activities and adhere to standards for compliance with CLIA, CAP, and state/local regulations and agencies.
  • Assist in writing, maintaining, and training standard operating procedures.
  • Perform proficiency testing to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Handle biohazardous wastes according to laboratory policy.
  • Maintain a neat and clean work environment.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • BS, MS, or Ph.D. degree in Medical Technology or a biological, chemical, or physical science required
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or Molecular Biologist (MB) from ASCP required
  • 2+ years of Clinical or Molecular laboratory experience performing testing on human and/or research specimens Preferred
