JOB SUMMARY
The Art Therapist in the PACE organization is responsible for enhancing cognitive function, social interaction, and emotional well-being for PACE participants with various behavioral health needs. The art therapist provides a blend of individual and group therapy sessions at the PACE center, or as needed in participants' homes or their facility if hospitalized. The therapist conducts comprehensive assessments to develop personalized treatment plans, focusing on using art to alleviate anxiety, depression, and agitation. The art therapist collaborates closely with the interdisciplinary team, documents participant progress, and communicates regularly with participants and families to provide updates and support. Additionally, they engage in program development, staff training, and community outreach to promote the benefits of art therapy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of participants' artistic preferences and therapeutic needs.
  • Develop individualized art therapy treatment plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Facilitate individual and group art therapy sessions tailored to the specific needs of participants, focusing on behavioral health and dementia support, and utilizing evidence-based approaches.
  • Utilize various art therapy techniques such as drawing, painting, sculpting, and collage-making to address therapeutic goals.
  • Address behavioral health issues such as anxiety, depression, and agitation through art therapy interventions, being available for interpretation of artwork related to feelings present and being expressed or withheld.
  • Work closely with the behavioral health team to integrate art therapy into participants' overall treatment plans.
  • Design and implement art therapy programs that stimulate cognitive function and memory recall in participants with dementia.
  • Use art to enhance communication, reduce agitation, and improve mood and social interactions among participants with dementia.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members including physicians, nurses, social workers, and caregivers to ensure a holistic approach to participant care.
  • Communicate regularly with participants' families and caregivers to provide updates on progress and offer support and education on the benefits of art therapy.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and outcomes in the EMR.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of art therapy interventions and make necessary adjustments to treatment plans.
  • Provide education and training to staff and caregivers on the principles and benefits of art therapy.
  • Stay current with developments in the field of art therapy and incorporate best practices into programming.

Program Development:

  • Assist in the development and enhancement of the art therapy program, including the creation of new therapeutic activities and resources.
  • Participate in community outreach and promotional activities to raise awareness of the art therapy program.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and move art supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Ability to engage in active artmaking, including setting up and cleaning up art materials.
  • Ability to work in various settings, including participant homes, day centers, and community spaces.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Master’s degree in art therapy from an accredited institution.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in art therapy from an accredited institution.
  • Registration and certification (ATR-BC) by the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB).
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience working with elderly populations, particularly those with behavioral health needs and dementia.
  • Strong knowledge of art therapy techniques and interventions for behavioral health and dementia care.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Compassionate, patient, and empathetic approach to participant care.
  • Ability to design and implement creative and engaging art therapy sessions.

** The employee selected for this role will have to work between our Oceanport and Lakehurst, NJ locations.
