Position Summary:

Under direct supervision, this position is responsible for the preventive

maintenance, repair, and operation of all city park related buildings, structures, grounds, and

park equipment. Position may be responsible for cutting grass, loading and unloading dirt, gravel,

and debris, and the cleaning of park restrooms and facilities.

Work is characterized by the necessity for considerable physical exertion, and by working under

varying weather conditions.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may include,

but are not limited to the following:

• Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of

buildings, grounds, and park structures;

• Maintain current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building and grounds

maintenance functions;

• Open and close parks and facilities as needed;

• Perform ground maintenance tasks: pick-up, load, and secure debris and trash, mowing, weed

trimming, and blowing;

• Perform park and pathway improvement tasks: minor repairs, cleans picnic tables, play

structures, and restrooms, blow pathways, sidewalks, and drives;

• Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment: monitor tire air pressure, check and

change oil, check and change air filters;

• Operate parks vehicular fleet and grounds maintenance equipment;

• Make emergency repairs of equipment

• Use various hand tools to perform repairs and tasks including but not limited to: shovels,

rakes, hoes, pruners, and trimmers;

• Monitor restroom and cleaning supplies;

• Walk pathways and parks to check for trash, fallen trees or limbs, or any other potential

hazards;

• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of department policies and procedures;

• Knowledge of proper loading, transportation, and unloading of equipment;

• Skill in operation of various types of ground maintenance equipment;

• Skill in operation of light and heavy duty vehicles;

• Skill in the use of hand tools like chain saws, pruners, drills, hammers, shovels, rakes,

etc.;

• Knowledge of parks systems to include location of parks, buildings, and boundaries;

• Knowledge of basic repair and inspection of parks structures and equipment;

• Ability to operate tractors, riding mowers, push mowers, and other maintenance

equipment;

• Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work

schedule;

• Ability to appear on time for work and complete assigned tasks within a reasonable period of

time or notify the supervisor in advance if unable to work;

• Ability to perform holiday and weekend work with occasional overtime required;

• Ability to learn and follow City policies and regulations.


Minimum Requirements:

• Valid Texas Driver’s License;

• HS Diploma or Equivalent;

• Must be able to pass a physical, drug screen, driver’s license and criminal background

check;

• Must have legal authorization to work in the United States of America;

• Literacy in English with the ability to communicate orally in writing, ability to understand,

follow, and transmit written and oral instructions and posted schedules;

• Working knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in parks and grounds

maintenance.

Essential Position:

This is a position that is essential to the provision of emergency services

during and/or following a disaster. Employees in this position may be required to remain on duty

during a man-made or natural disaster despite a general evacuation order of the area. Such

employees are also expected to remain available for their normal shifts and for recall to emergency

duty unless specifically released by City Management to evacuate.

Employees in this position are specifically advised to plan accordingly for these circumstances and

that any failure to adhere to these requirements mat result in disciplinary action up to and

including termination.


Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

• Must be able to exercise good judgment; make competent decisions; handle multiple projects; meet

deadlines; and work well under pressure and stress;

• To perform the essential functions of the job, must be able to talk, read, see, walk, and hear;

operate maintenance equipment; follow oral and written directives; perform strenuous physical

activities to include, exerting up to 50 lbs of pressure, lifting heavy objects, shoveling,

crawling, bending, kneeling, climbing on and off equipment, and operating vibrating equipment;

• Must also have good hand/foot/eye coordination to operate equipment; able to lift up to 50 lbs

of equipment several times a day; work indoors, outdoors, in building attics or storage lofts, in

trenches, on level, slippery, sloping, unstable and muddy terrain, and under constantly noisy

conditions; and work in adverse environmental conditions to include inclement weather such as rain,

sleet, snow, heat, sun exposure, dust/mist and hazardous conditions such as street traffic; and

exposure to insects, noxious plants, snakes, paints and chemicals;

• Must work extensive hours and respond within 30 minutes to an on-call or emergency callback, as

required;

• Must maintain an effective and pleasant working relationship with coworkers, supervisors, and

the general public at all times.
