Job DescriptionJob DescriptionThe ideal candidate will have a proven track record in handling appellate matters, as well as post-conviction matters, demonstrating expertise in legal research, writing, and oral advocacy. The candidate will also have a strong background in criminal law, particularly in post-conviction and appellate proceedings. This role involves managing a diverse caseload, formulating appellate strategies, and delivering persuasive arguments before both the lower and appellate courts.
- Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough legal research, identify legal issues and draft high-quality appellate briefs, motions, and memoranda.
- Prepare and file post-conviction petitions and motions and supporting documents.
- Prepare and present compelling oral arguments before appellate courts, effectively advocating on behalf of clients
- Have a general understanding of the Crimes Code, Vehicle Code, PA Rules of Evidence, PA Rules of Criminal Procedure;
- Work closely with trial attorneys, clients, and other stakeholders to ensure a cohesive approach to the appeal process.
- Conduct thorough investigations, including interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence, and collaborating with experts to support claims of wrongful conviction or sentencing errors.
- Review trial records, transcripts, and relevant evidence to identify grounds for appeal and formulate arguments.
- Stay current on changes in appellate law and jurisprudence to ensure the application of the latest legal principles in practice.
- Ability to relate to indigent clients;
- Able to represent indigent persons in more serious felony cases, including some homicide cases.
- Requirements / Qualifications:
- Must be an active member of the PA Bar and in good standing;
- Must have a valid driver's license and vehicle;
- Must be able to pass Child Clearance;
- Must be able to work independently;
- 5+ years' experience
This is a grant-funded position with the possibility of being a full-time budgeted position if approved by the County.
