JOB SUMMARY

The Stationary 2nd Class Engineer will report directly to the Chief Engineer, and will operates and maintains the physical functionality of the all university main campus properties, i.e. office spaces, classrooms, dorms, and common areas. This position is required to respond to work orders, emergencies, and to perform routine and preventive maintenance on equipment. Often, responsibilities will include a variety of emergency repairs and maintenance task, such as plumbing, electric, and HVAC related issues. The position is expected to be proactive in preventive maintenance and routine maintenance, recording and reporting activities to the appreciate authorities, usually the Chief Engineer.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions.
  2. Records data such as temperature of equipment hours of operation, temperature or pressure, water levels, analysis of gases voltage load and generator balance.
  3. Adjusts manual controls or overrides automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, switch to backup equipment or systems, or to shut down equipment.
  4. Visually inspects equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment or lubrication.
  5. Maintains equipment by tightening fillings, repacking bearings, replacing packing, gaskets, valves, recorders, gauges, and cleaning or replacing burners or other components.
  6. Performs water filtration tests and apply chemical additives, such as water softener, into treatment tank to prevent scale buildup and to clean boiler lines.
  7. Properly reports operational and maintenance actions taken during shift in operator’s logbook.
  8. Other duties may be assigned.

PROCEDURES

In the event of a vacancy with an engineer’s shift due to, but not limited to, illness, vacation, or job vacancy, the engineer schedule Monday thru Friday day shift will be assigned to cover this vacancy.

The employee will give a two-week advanced notice to his engineering supervisor.

In the event that there is not adequate staff to fill this position in time of need, the Central Plant management will adjust the schedule as necessary.

Facilities/Central Plant management retains the right to assign any employee to any given shift or number of hours necessary to maintain a safe, comfortable and secure working environment.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Class 2 Engineering License
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in the engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of high school or GED diploma.


LANGUAGE SKILLS

Verbal ability is necessary to read and understand technical manuals, motor coordination and manual and finger dexterity are necessary for adjusting valves, using hand tools, lifting, climbing and stooping.

REASONING ABILITY

Must have ability to work with people in a tactful, diplomatic manner. Requires manual dexterity for lifting objects weighing up to 50 lbs., and the normal course of repairs, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, hearing, smelling, near vision, far vision, dept perception visual, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, visual accommodation, color vision, and repetitive motion. Must have an adequate field of vision and color discrimination to read meters and gauges and to detect signal lights. Must have adequate hearing to detect warning signals and equipment malfunctions. Must be able to work alone. Subject to rotating shifts. Must possess logical and analytical thought processes and be able to use good judgement on job decisions. Must be able to handle stress in certain emergency situations.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must have a minimum of a second-class City of New Orleans, Operating Engineers License for steam boilers and air conditioning.
