Crop Insurance Agent

Rare opportunity to have a career while working to support Northeast agriculture. We are an established Crop Insurance Agency with clients throughout New England and New York. Our growers range from a few miles away to 500 miles away. This special niche of insurance is overseen by USDA and is intended to help Growers of row crops, fruit crops, dairy, etc. It provides growers with a safety net against unavoidable crop losses due to natural causes such as weather, insects and plant disease. We work with growers on a one to one basis providing the knowledge they need to make good Crop Insurance decisions. Crop Insurance is all we do. We care strongly about regional agriculture and the need to sustain viable agriculture in the Northeast.

Our small company is made up of a team where each person is trained to handle all aspects of the business. This is primarily an office position, but it can have a significant amount of field work. Crop insurance has deadlines. These deadlines often mean spending time in the field (sometimes overnight) signing up growers or reviewing coverage in person. Each member of our team can work directly with growers in the field explaining policies, coverages and taking crop reports. For much of the year office work is the primary focus. Each member works in the office processing forms, entering Loss Notices, creating individualized quotes, answering insured questions, filing, etc. When there is work to be done, everyone works together.

A real opportunity for growth for the person who is outgoing and can form good working relationships with new and existing clients. Pay is by salary, supplemented by commissions. There are days (and nights) spent in the field but, this is primarily an office based job and members are expected work at the office in Thomaston, CT. A vehicle is provided when in the field with growers.

Crop Insurance is very different than conventional Insurance lines. We fill a unique niche. Customer service is very important.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Sell and maintain Crop Insurance policies. These are Federal Crop Insurance Policies. Compliance with rules and regulations governing those policies is required.

• Build and maintain good relationships with Agricultural Producers.

• Educate producers about Crop Insurance through presentations; trade shows and grower meetings throughout year..

• Work directly with current and potential customers. Identifying which products would best suit the producers operation.

• Work with other team members on tasks and assignments. Must be Team Oriented.

• Duties also include processing reports, filing, mailings, research and other office work as necessary.

• Provide professional personal customer service to meet or exceed customer expectations.

Qualifications:

• Bachelors or Associates degree

• Must have the ability to work independently

• Must have excellent communication skills both verbal and written.

• Must have computer skills and abilities.

• Current Property & Casualty license (if not, will help to obtain)

• The position requires the ability to travel as needed (infrequently overnight). Individuals should have a good driving record.

• A background with agriculture is helpful but not required.

This person will be trained up on all the office duties and processing systems. After thorough training in the office that member will be trained in field work.
