Job Description

General Summary

Under general supervision provides radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by physician according to established standards and practices. Coordinate and direct the daily work activities of Radiation Therapists. Supervise and instruct students.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

Oversees, directs and instructs Radiation Therapists in the daily administration of radiation therapy.

A. Assists the Radiation Therapy Chief and Assistant Chief in the preparation of work schedules to assure appropriate coverage. Assigns and reassigns personnel as necessary. Provides feedback for employee performance reviews and makes recommendations for merit increases, promotions, and disciplinary actions, as appropriate. Instructs and supervises radiation therapy students.

B. Assists with orientation, supervision, and training of technical staff to ensure competence of the functionality of all therapy related equipment. Teach staff therapists any new and innovative methods of treatment and routine techniques used by the department. Provide clinical instructions, guidance and demonstration of skills in the evaluation and treatment of patients to Radiation Therapy.

C. Offers technical guidance and counseling regarding complicated or problematic radiation therapy issues, patient scheduling problems or difficulties with equipment.

D. Assists in communicating, enforcing and maintaining established department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an AMA approved program in Radiation Therapy Technology or Radiologic Technology is required. An Associate of Science degree in Radiation Therapy Technology is preferred.
  • Registration as a Radiation Therapy Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) is required.
  • Licensure as a Radiation Therapy Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology in the state of Maryland is required.
  • CPR certification is required.
  • Three years of clinical practice in Radiation Therapy is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient knowledge of radiologic technology, radiation therapy, routine nursing procedures, radiation protection and safety procedures. Knowledge of dosimetry, mathematics/physics, anatomy and physiology.
  • Proficient knowledge of the various types of radiation therapy equipment, such as, linear accelerator and cobalt treatment units, general radiography equipment, simulators, block cutting equipment and personal computers.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are required in order to work with patients, medical and nursing personnel, and to oversee and direct the work of lower level technologists.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
