Position Overview:
The Asphalt Superintendent (AS) is responsible for overseeing the completion and construction of all Asphalt jobs and crews. The AS works directly with the Project Manager (PM) and Customer to organize jobs, maintain timelines and budgets, manage field personnel, ensure employee safety, and deliver a first-class product to make the customer happy.

 

Primary Duties:

  • Work with PM and discuss a 2-5 day “look ahead” schedule. Make sure you obtain a dump folder for each job.
  • Before the start of the project, review the project “dump folder’ with the PM and know the scope, amount of material, time, and equipment necessary to complete each job.
  • Work with PM in advance on scheduling trucks, equipment, and materials needed for jobs.
  • Upon arriving to the job, verify pavement areas, and check for grade, proper drainage, and potential subgrade failure issues.
  • Protect surrounding structures from damage – curbs, catch basins, concrete work, aprons, buildings, bollards, landscaped beds, etc.
  • Have all necessary materials and supplies on the crew truck prior to starting a job. Inform the PM of any supplies needed and ensure there is a proper supply of common supplies in the shop at all times.
  • Communicate with your crew and ensure they know where the job is and what time to be there.
  • Manage your crew; provide clear direction to each person and establish production goals consistent with the project budget.
  • Conduct 10/10 meetings with your staff each morning.
  • Conduct weekly safety meetings (Toolbox Talks) with your crew, have your crew sign the safety attendance record, and turn the record in to HR when completed.
  • Ensure your crew is following all OSHA regulations and all company policies regarding safety, including hard hats, safety vests or hi-vis shirts, protective eyewear, footwear, and the Company policy with regards to appearance. Monitor your crew for illness, especially in high-heat weather.
  • Ensure the project is on time and budget; communicate with PM if budget cannot be met.
  • Manage Broker trucks on your project.
  • Communicate with the asphalt plant personnel.
  • Advise PM throughout the day on project progress and of any materials you need.
  • Make sure your job is cleaned up daily. Make sure equipment is greased daily, and maintains proper levels of fuel, hydraulic fluid, and engine oil.
  • Coordinate equipment moves with PM.
  • Communicate rain days with the PM and all field employees.
  • Communicate equipment repairs, including trucks with the PM and Shop Manager daily.
  • Follow company policies in the event of an accident. In the event of an injury, call 911. 
  • Enforce company policies with regard to the Drug-Free Workplace.
  • Report any violations of the employee handbook to the HR Director immediately.
  • Report tardy or absent employees to the HR Director immediately.
  • Handle personnel and other complaints with your crew. If you cannot handle or solve the issue, advise your PM and the HR Director.
  • Review employees’ timesheets and approve each employee’s work hours daily.
  • Attend Superintendent meetings.
  • Deliver first-class customer service to employees and customers.
