This a 40 hour full-time, salaried exempt position.


Purpose:

The Senior Education Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation and coordination of animal ambassador care and related programs and projects for the Conservation Education Department and other departments.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Focuses heavily on husbandry, training and presenting the education animal ambassador collection, (a variety of taxa including invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals),
  • Assists in the hiring, training, supervising and evaluation of Part Time staff and Seasonal amphitheater staff, seasonal interns, and volunteers,
  • Assists in record keeping for the education animal ambassador collection, including daily reports, enrichment calendars, animal welfare monitoring, and animal handling data,
  • Creates and facilitates conservation education programs and presentations both within the Zoo setting and outside of the Zoo setting, including school programs, outreaches, scout programs, and weekend programs for individuals and families,
  • Assists with the management and presentation of summer programs, amphitheater shows, outreach and Wild Encounters. This position focus on building and delivering Animal Ambassador Wild Encounter opportunities.
  • Assist with light maintenance and repair of animal habitats as needed,
  • Plays a key role in the development and implementation of programs as needed.

Other Functions:

  • Participates in various Zoo committees, such as the Enrichment Committee and Safety Committee when needed.
  • Act as Education supervisor of the day when scheduled throughout the year.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Performance Factors:

  2. Provides excellent customer service in the areas of guest relations and park beautification:
    • Answers visitor inquiries or finds someone who can;
    • Is knowledgeable of location of exhibits, restrooms, concessions, rentals, etc.
    • Disposes of litter and waste throughout the park and zoo facilities.


Education/Experience/Knowledge/Skills:

B.S. or B.A. degree in Zoology, Biology, Education or a related field with a minimum of two years engaging with and caring for education animal ambassadors in a zoological park or other informal setting; knowledge in the fields of conservation, ecology, and zoology. Strong organizational and time management skills are required, along with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated proficiency with computer software programs, presentation skills and attention to detail are required. Familiarity with AZA, ZAA, USDA, and AHA ambassador animal standards and requirements, familiarity with record keeping software ZIMs, and public speaking experience is preferred. Act 33 and 34 Clearances and FBI clearances are required, along with a valid PA driver’s license.


Physical Requirements:

  1. Manual dexterity to operate office machinery such as personal computer, telephone, projector and AV equipment, copier, etc.
  2. Work may be performed within the park in all weather conditions and includes weekends. This position requires sitting, standing, bending, walking, pushing, and lifting up to 50lbs.
