Overview
The Outpatient Pharmacy Lead Technician possesses expertise and oversight on different pharmacy services and workflow processes. The outpatient pharmacy lead technician builds and overlaps upon the skills and responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician/Pharmaceutical Buyer position and is focused on being a role model, mentor, and guide to the pharmacy team while supporting management and pharmacists. The lead pharmacy technician must be able to triage and prioritize pharmacy tasks, balance efficiency and accuracy, capable of working independently and as a team in a fast paced and limited staff environment. Is able to provide quality customer service through compassionate patient care while ensuring regulatory compliance standards are met. The Lead Technician performs technical, clerical, administrative and distributive pharmacy functions under the direction of a licensed pharmacist. The Lead Technician will serve as liaison between support staff, professional staff (pharmacists), pharmacy management, and other departments as needed. The Lead Technician will act as a resource and a leader within the department.
Responsibilities
Administrative
* Effectively follows workflow procedures with an in-depth understanding of each workstation; manages own administrative and clerical responsibilities while shifting to help the pharmacy workflow where needed.
* Assists management, pharmacists, pharmaceutical buyer and other staff with day to day workflow and administrative activities which may include needed reports as needed.
* Actively seeks opportunities to expand clinical, clerical and administrative skills, using available tools and training resources, to develop knowledge and expertise to accurately and effectively assist patients and the department.
* Coaches, trains, and mentors new pharmacy technicians to develop a strong/competitive pharmacy team; ensures new pharmacy technicians have the resources and proper training to perform their jobs effectively.
* Contributes to the pharmacy team by looking for opportunities to support individual and department goals, provides flexibility to business needs and adapts to changes at work to support work related challenges.
* Proactively takes additional tasks, responsibilities, projects, and other opportunities that help improve patient care, customer service, and department needs.
* Balances quality and efficiency in all tasks while maintaining accuracy and consistency that meets workflow demands and department goals.
* Demonstrates leadership skills in ability to delegate tasks to appropriate personnel, educate staff within and outside of the department, identify and solve potential problems.
* Implements and evaluates the use of new technologies, pharmacy services. Assists with the development and implementation of new policies, and procedures related to department workflow processes.
* Performs other duties as assigned/required.
Compliance/Safety
* Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.
* If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.
* Completes assigned station checks thoroughly to remove expired inventory each month as needed.
* Demonstrates working knowledge of pharmacy law pertaining to the control, monitoring, and distribution of medications including controlled substances
Patient Care
* Prioritizes customer needs, displays empathy and genuine care in all patient care interactions, ensures quality customer service and patient satisfaction.
* Understands and follows Federal and State laws regulations, professional standards and principles; follows NAH policies and procedures to ensure patient safety and protects patient privacy and security.
* Proactively identifies and helps resolve potential problems to ensure customers have their medications when needed; collaborates with other pharmacy and medical staff, insurance companies to resolve prescription issues, ensure accuracy, and deliver timely resolution of any medication related concerns.
* Participates in process improvement projects in designated areas aimed at providing safe and effective pharmacy services to patients.
* Assists and support any other patient care need as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
High School Diploma or GED- Required
Certification & Licensures
Licensed with State Board of Pharmacy- Required
Certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board- Required
Experience
Minimum 3 year experience as a Pharmacy Technician in an Ambulatory Care Setting- Required
Minimum of 6 months experience in designated area- Preferred
Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
