POSITION SUMMARY


The Environmental Technician is under the direct supervision of the Environmental Manager and the general supervision of the Tribal Administrator. Incumbent shall assist in the coordination of environmental activities.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  1. Assists on all Environmental projects needed to be accomplished, as identified by the Tribes’ objectives.
  2. Conduct upkeep of the Tribal Community Garden.
  3. Assists in the planning process for current and future funding.
  4. Assists in the Solid Waste Program.
  5. Collects residential solid waste.
  6. Collects, weighs, records, and removes volumes of solid waste from the Rancheria.
  7. Assist with the monthly environmental newsletter article.
  8. Conduct air monitoring program.
  9. Assists Environmental Manager with water sampling.
  10. Conducts research into future funding sources.
  11. Assists Environmental Outreach Officer with outreach activities.
  12.  Assists in revision or creation of environmental documents.
  13. Assist with monitoring of construction projects on the Rancheria.
  14. Monitor areas in need of restoration and with solid waste problems. 
  15. Other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age
  2. High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  3. Knowledge of the community and community issues.
  4. Knowledge of the tribal government and participation in community issues.
  5. Knowledge of solid waste terminology.
  6. Ability to speak and write effectively, and to prepare clear, concise and to assist in written reports.
  7. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with state, tribal, federal, and other individuals.
  8. Ability to work outdoors in different weather elements.
  9. Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  10. Ability to assist on diverse projects.
  11. Ability to follow written instructions and to organize assignments for supervisor.
  12. Ability to express ideas effectively, orally, and as necessary, in writing.


DRIVER’S LICENSE and INSURANCE REQUIREMENT:

 

Possession of a valid California license at the appropriate level including necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California to perform the essential job functions of the position and qualify for the Tribe’s vehicle insurance, plus provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:


Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.

 

WORK CONDITIONS:      

                                                                                                

Work Conditions may include, but are not limited to, the following: Bending at the waist, sitting still for extended periods of time, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, hearing and speaking to exchange information, seeing to read reports and data and occasional lifting of 50 pounds or more.


SAFETY:

 

  1. Supports a safe work environment by performing all duties in accordance with Tribal safety policies and procedures. This includes, but is not limited to: reporting all incidents and accidents to your supervisor timely (within 24 hours); maintaining work areas in a safe and healthful manner; reporting and correcting any unsafe working conditions; operating vehicles in a safe and lawful manner while conducting Tribal business; providing input and assistance to reduce or eliminate workplace hazards; actively supporting ongoing safety efforts, including recommendations of the safety committee.
  2. Due to the nature of interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.


DRUG SCREEN


Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians requires the successful completion of a drug screening of all potential Tribal employees prior to being hired.  The Tribe recognizes that the State of California has legalized the use of marijuana. The Tribe is located on federally owned trust land and complies with federal laws. Therefore, marijuana use is prohibited, and all drug tests will include a screening for THC.

 

Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians recognizes a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy, and employees will be required to sign a Consent to Drug and/or Alcohol Testing.  Employees may be selected for alcohol / drug testing upon reasonable suspicion, and upon any/all accidents.

 

BACKGROUND CHECK


Candidates for this position will be subject to criminal and character background checks and fingerprinting prior to being hired.  Verification of previous employment and education will also be conducted after the interview if an offer of employment is being considered.

NATIVE PREFERENCE


Preference in hiring is given to either the most qualified applicant or a Native American candidate who meets the minimum qualifications. When two (2) or more Native American candidates have comparable qualifications, the following order of preference shall apply: (1) Members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (2) Spouses or domestic partners (certified through Tribal Court) of members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (3) Parents of children of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (4) All other documented Native Americans; (5) All other applicants in accordance with Title 25, U.S. Code, Section 472 and 473. Applicants claiming Native preference must submit verification of Indian eligibility.
